The grieving Guerra family said a final farewell to their two slain loved ones at the same time; Enrico Guerra and his daughter, Anika.

While a feeling of immense loss lingered in the air, some mourners used the occasion to issue a call to action in the fight against crime, as they reflected on the lives of the child and her father, referring to them as "cherished souls."

Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:48Aniko was a standout student, always at the forefront, proudly carrying the caps of our school mascot. She graduated as a school historian.
01:10But her brilliance was encouraged by the support of her parents and by extension her family.
01:16Aniko, her father, never missed a school event. And Aniko's greatest supporter was Aniko. Today I ask the fathers in this funeral, be supporters of your kids.
01:34As the two have departed this life together at the hands of gunmen, sorrow remains for those who knew them and loved them dearly.
01:43This country has lost its soul and we just need love and joy now.
01:51Now forced to bury the son she got pregnant with at the age of 15, fathered by her husband at the time, Hespa Ali Dasu, in delivering his eulogy said her labor of love for her children was to give them a life she didn't have, a life she said others may have been envious of.
02:09Not because you grow poor and I will always say this, your children have to die poorer.
02:15She said her family is hardworking. Ali Dasu has taken note of the support which has poured in for her family and the many tears that have been shed for her son.
02:25The manner in which her son and granddaughter's lives were snuffed out has been enough for her to visualize a haunting scenario.
02:33Because some delinquent, evil-minded person or animal will do something like this.
02:44And they want to sit down normal and talk with their partners and laugh because he's a gunter.
02:50Bad people don't sleep. Bad people don't hide.
02:56We are not a bad man's family. We are a family and a praying family.
03:02Former councillor for Moruga, Francis Paul, echoing sentiments he said are shared by the Guerra family that as they bury the father and daughter, they are issuing a call to action.
03:13I want to call on the powers that be to reintroduce joint patrols with the soldiers because we are scared to come out. We are prisoners in our own homes.
03:24Ali Dasu's closing words were a statement to Mona's but a message to her son.
03:30Rico will fly high because when I hear his stories, he comes from me and God gave me a good soul.
03:39God gave me strength. God gave me courage. God gave me power. God gave me love.
03:50But God gave me Rico too and I can tell you, here now, Rico, mommy's still here. We're going to fix that.
