How the riots on Britain’s streets began

With much of the news this week being centred on the violent and destructive riots that have overwhelmed some of Britain’s cities, here is a reminder on how incorrect rumours started the riots.

00:00Now, I imagine you won't have been able to miss the riots that have been taking place

00:03recently and it's easy to lose track of what prompted them, so let's go over the

00:07events of the last week in a bit.

00:08Last Monday there was a stabbing attack in Southport, which resulted in three deaths

00:11and ten injuries amongst a group that largely consisted of young girls and their parents.

00:15Due to the alleged perpetrator being under the age of 18, police couldn't reveal details

00:19of his identity and rumours swirled on social media that it was a, and I'll use finger

00:23quotes here, fresh off the boat immigrant.

00:25Let me be clear, that isn't true.

00:27Regardless, enough people believed it that it gave those in the country who live in fear

00:30of immigration and multiculturalism a reason to riot.

00:33Here in Manchester, shops were plundered and people were injured.

00:36Greater Manchester police have already charged 28 people with disorder and more are expected

00:39as officers comb through CCTV footage of the incidents.

00:43More disorder was planned last night, but across the country many police officers and

00:46officials said they were pleased to see peaceful demonstrations appearing rather than violent

00:50ones.

00:51There are likely to be more rallies from right-wing groups over the weekend, so follow the example

00:55from last night rather than what you saw in Bolton earlier this week if you do plan

00:59to counter-protest.
