00:03Derbyshire Police are appealing for information after a Sparrowhawk has died after being shot in Chesterfield.

00:09The Derbyshire Rural Crime Team were contacted by the Pet Samaritans Animal Sanctuary in Old Whittington

00:15regarding a Sparrowhawk that had been taken into their care.

00:18A spokesperson for the crime team said,

00:21the injured Sparrowhawk was found by a member of the public in the Walton area of Chesterfield on July 24th.

00:27On closer inspection it became clear that the bird had been shot by what we believe to be an air rifle.

00:32Sadly, despite the best efforts of staff at the Pet Samaritans, the Sparrowhawk has since died from its injuries.

00:38Sparrowhawks are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981,

00:43which means it is illegal to intentionally kill, harm or physically move them.

00:47Anyone found guilty of killing a Sparrowhawk could face an unlimited fine and up to six months imprisonment.

01:06A new petition is calling on Derbyshire County Council to preserve the Love Locks

01:10set to be removed from a bridge in the Peak District next month.

01:13Bakewell's famous Love Locks footbridge is set to undergo major maintenance and repair programme

01:18from Monday, September 16th and those who have left locks on the bridge are being asked to collect them before this date.

01:24Around 5,500 padlocks have been attached to the bridge since 2011

01:29and Derbyshire County Council says repairs can only be carried out once the locks have been removed.

01:34Kathy Clappinson, who organised the petition, said she hoped the Council would save the locks

01:39rather than recycling those that are not removed from the bridge before the cut-off date.

01:42She added that the Love Locks could be used to create a new piece of artwork that could be displayed in the town

01:47allowing the memories associated with each lock to continue.

01:51Councillor Charlotte Cupid, who is the County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Assets and Transport

01:56said the authority aimed to be sensitive and responsible when carrying out the repairs

02:01the first time that major work has been undertaken on the bridge since it was installed in the late 1990s.

02:07She said,

02:08We understand the significance this bridge has developed for many people as a place to attach a lock

02:13to remember loved ones or to celebrate special anniversaries.

02:16However, as we have noted over the last few years, the bridge requires repairs

02:21which include untaking significant areas of rust away

02:24as well as repairing the pedestrian walkway which is worn through in a number of places.

02:28She said,

02:29We can only do these repair works by removing all the padlocks attached to the bridge.
