00:00The landlord of Sheffield's oldest domestic building that's used as a pub.
00:07Yeah I mean it's a great little story and we are connected to Sheffield Castle
00:11which has been currently excavated at the moment and Manor Lodge which is up
00:15on Hyde Park that way so but this was actually a hunting lodge for the sixth
00:19sailor Shrewsbury and his wife Besseth Hardwick who was the second richest woman
00:22in the country at the time and they actually held Mary Queen of Scots in
00:26Sheffield hence the name of the old Queen's Head. So people have the
00:31conception that we were built in 1475 that's incorrect because that was the
00:34first records of the building were actually built in the 1300s. Originally the
00:39building was an L shape extended further towards Pond Hill and then basically
00:45across refers to what we think and this is one of the original fireplaces that
00:48we're next to at the moment from the building so it has a lot of the original
00:52structures the future still in the building. Well it was Victorian so the
00:56pub itself was built around around the actual building someone was living here
01:00just as a residential premises in the Victorian era and then later on down the
01:05line about to think I think it was about 30-40 years after it opened it was
01:08then incorporated into the pub. There's rumours that there are tunnels
01:11underneath the building if there are tunnels underneath we believe and a few
01:15historians as well believe that it runs the Sheffield Castle which is again
01:18doing the park area that's been reconstructed in Sheffield and possibly the
01:22cathedral as well apparently in them tunnels of America and the Scots of
01:26Shaw was found at some point near the building. I'm really trying to push the
01:29history of the place out here and you know what the pub's known for which again
01:33there's history and the ghosts of the pub which I'm quite sure that
01:36everyone's aware of. Yeah I mean one of the best ones that we've got is an old
01:40landlord before myself used to clean down every single night used to do what I do
01:43basically we'd put the glasses away make sure you know make sure that everything was put into place and every
01:48morning there'd be a half a beer on the bar or on a table somewhere and it was full
01:53and they do that every single morning and so one day got inquisitive about what
01:56this beer was had a taste and it wasn't one they even sold in the pub so what it
02:00did was basically pulled one from the bottle of the bar itself put it on the
02:03side the next morning it was gone it's never happened since we also have a dog
02:07a ghost of a dog that's reputedly here that if it likes it will sit on your feet or
02:11it'll sit on your lap so that's two of them there are a few more as well
02:16we've had them apparitions that have been seen for you know full operations that
02:19have been so it's been said they've been seen one's a civil war soldier that
02:22stands right by the side of the fireplace then we've had a young boy and an
02:26older gentleman holding hands by the fireplace we've also had a maid but
02:31a woman in an old maid's outfit being seen in here as well and that's all just in
02:35this building itself so as we come into the older part we've got the original
02:39outside of the building just inside the bar here where you can see we've got the
02:44actual earl of shrewsby here on an epitaph and we've also got his wife Besseth
02:50Hardwick right next to him here so these were originally on the outside of the
02:54building and then you obviously step into the oldest part which you come in
02:58first thing you can see is all the wooden beams some original some obviously
03:02reconditioned because it's a very old building and then like that leads you into
03:06where the fireplace is an old doorway in the corner that's been sealed off which
03:11would have been in the original Lenton entrance and you can actually see with
03:14a lot of the photos that we have at the moment in the pub you can see the pub
03:18in its old estate you can see how it would have been back in the day and also
03:23across onto that on the back wall there we've also got exactly the same a drawing
03:27of the pub as it wasn't it's an old day and then we've got our lovely piano in the
03:30corner it's a great two star listed building yeah
03:32so the English Heritage so as people probably know the work on going outside at the
03:38moment it all has to be done to certain specifications like the the actual cover
03:43coating on there is lime and things like that that was incorporated as part of the
03:46building to start with they're not allowed to make any change major changes to the
03:50outside
