The sand on Alexandria's Mediterranean coast in Egypt is covered by overlapping umbrellas as thousands of Egyptians choose the city's public beaches for escaping this summer's extreme heat.

The number of public beaches has been reduced from 425 in 2015 to 75 in 2021 according to think tank Alternative Public Solutions, pushing beachgoers even closer together.
