00:00No, this isn't a scene from the newest Hollywood space adventure.
00:08This is China's Mars camp.
00:09It's in the Gobi Desert in northwest China, and in the past it's been called the most
00:13Martian place on Earth.
00:15And it's not hard to see why.
00:16The area features a rugged and arid landscape, complete with red rock, rough sand, and oftentimes
00:22even temperatures rivaling those of the Red Planet.
00:25Which is why it makes total sense that China would set up a Mars training facility in that
00:28very environment.
00:30The 1,735-acre facility was opened back in 2019, built for both space enthusiasts and
00:36space professionals to see what it might be like to live on Mars.
00:39And aside from the main training and simulation installation, the camp also has a tourism
00:44center and a Mars community, a push by the Chinese government to integrate space and
00:48science into the tourism scene.
00:50Because as the new space race heats up and nations around the world vie to send the first
00:54humans to Mars, the first thing that has to be done is get young people excited about
00:59space.
