With the passage of Hurricane Beryl, neighbouring islands continue to recover and rebuild. Beryl left a trail of devastation in its aftermath, including uprooted trees, blown roofs, leaving many homeless. Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management from Grenada conducted a site visit to assess project intervention sites in Carriacou.

Faith Cheruiyot has more on this story.

00:00PISLM, whose mission is to facilitate exchange of experiences and good land management practices
00:06between participating countries, paid a visit to Kariakou.
00:10The visit aimed to understand the impact of Hurricane Beryl and to engage the local farming
00:15community to determine their priority needs.
00:18They provided a view of the devastation and what was left behind.
00:22The intervention team visited sites in Dumfries, Limlaire, and Bellevue South in Kariakou.
00:29The intervention project by PISLM aims to assess damage related to soil erosion, land
00:35degradation, and soil health, says project manager Trevor Thompson.
00:40So PISLM is committed to supporting the countries that have had impact from the storm and we
00:48are here today just to do a quick, rapid assessment to evaluate what has happened and what are
00:53the needs, both from the agricultural farming area and also for the livestock area, which
01:00are two areas that were marked for intervention actions under this project.
01:09PISLM stressed the importance of engaging with farmers as a critical step in developing
01:13the Sustainable Land Management Disaster Response Work Plan to assist project countries that
01:20were affected by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
01:23The work plan, already implemented in Kariakou, seeks to improve the island's land and soil
01:29management in line with Grenada's 2017 Voluntary Land Degradation Neutrality targets that should
01:36be achieved by 2030.
01:38PISLM is conducting similar interventions in St. Lucia, Jamaica, and Barbados, all countries
01:46affected by Hurricane Beryl.
