How Ellevest's founder survived a handful of glass cliffs to helping women amass wealth through investing.
Transcript
00:00I got a call from the CEO of Bank of America at the time saying the financial advisors were
00:05hemorrhaging them, they're leaving. Do you think you can come and turn the business around? And I
00:09said, oh look, it's another glass cliff. Here's another opportunity to go into a business that is
00:15not doing well. Then spent a couple of years really working with the terrific financial advisors
00:22there, getting real growth, beating plan, gaining share. And two years after I got there, I got
00:29called in by the new CEO who essentially said, thanks for the turnaround lady. We're going to
00:34give it to this gentleman over here who's never run a wealth management business before. I wasn't
00:39completely surprised because I knew we weren't big buddies, but there is something about being
00:44brought into turnaround a business and doing it. And then on the other end, you know, we're going
00:49to flip it back to the people who represent the majority of the industry, as opposed to allowing
00:56you to, now that you, the glass cliff is no longer glass, stay out there. Yeah, it made me feel
01:01terrible. And it also was such a gift. And even as it was happening, I was like, this is actually
01:07like literally such a gift. If you don't want me, why would I want to be here? I was very comfortable
01:14in the cultures of Sanford Bernstein or Citi. I don't think I danced into work every day,
01:20but I never would have left the job. But when I was forced to leave, it was embarrassing and sad
01:27and humiliating and unfair and all the things, but it was also sort of a cool, right? Cool. And I always
01:37knew there was going to be a next. I didn't know what the next would be. Yes, I did get a call to
01:42turn around another business in the industry. Hey, how'd you like your third glass cliff? I'm like,
01:46you know what? I'm going to pass on the third glass cliff. But I always knew if I could just
01:53center myself and spend some time really thinking about and getting clear on what was important to
02:02me and what the opportunities were and where I could have an impact and where I could pull
02:06together the team. I knew the next chapter could be even better than the chapters before. And
02:12damn it, I was right.
