00:00We know that a broken hearted person has a broken heart, but in the case of 26-year-old
00:26Jeanne, it's not the reason why her heart is often blocked.
00:31And it's not just the heart that's hurting, but also the so-called acid reflux.
00:38When I get a heartburn, it's really hot in my heart.
00:42My heart is swelling.
00:44That's when I have a hard time breathing.
00:46I breathe deeply.
00:48It's like the feeling that you're being attacked by your heart.
00:51You think you're going to die.
00:54All of our food passes through our esophagus to our intestines.
00:59Here, there are digestive acids that dissolve in our food.
01:03But there are times when it goes up to the esophagus.
01:06The reason is to produce acid reflux, or what we call gastroesophageal reflux disease.
01:14Among its symptoms, the pain of the heart, or what is called heartburn,
01:19and the feeling that it's like you're in pain.
01:22It's something that Jeanne also experiences.
01:25I feel that it's a bit bitter.
01:28It's bitter and sour.
01:31But my esophagus is heating up.
01:40To better explain acid reflux, we did a simple experiment.
01:45For example, this bottle of soft drink is our stomach.
01:48And its contents are digestive acids.
01:51These candies are what we eat.
01:54If we drop these into the soft drink, the contents of the bottle will splash like a fountain.
01:59This is where acid reflux attacks.
02:06The lining of the esophagus and the lining of the stomach are different.
02:10So whenever there's acid from the stomach that goes up,
02:14because it's not normal that there's acid in the esophagus,
02:17the patient will feel something.
02:21Through what we call endoscopy,
02:24we can know if a person is experiencing acid reflux.
02:31The patient is fasting for about six hours.
02:34You can wake him up, or you can put him to sleep.
02:39He's positioned on the left lateral side.
02:42And then there's a mouth guard where I'll put the instrument.
02:49It's hard to confirm, especially if the patient is just experiencing acid reflux.
02:54The symptoms are usually heartburn.
02:58But if you ask the president of the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology,
03:02Dr. Judith Cabasin-Tonko,
03:05It's just that we call it heartburn because
03:08the location of the heart is in the middle.
03:13But it's not actually your heart that is causing you the problem.
03:16But it is the acid in the stomach that goes up into the esophagus.
03:21There are foods that are often affected by acid reflux.
03:25Citrus fruits are one of them because of their natural acids
03:28that are more prone to acid reflux.
03:33For some, dairy products such as milk and cheese
03:36are also prone to acid reflux because of their lactose.
03:40Even spicy and oily foods.
03:44Drinks with caffeine, such as soft drinks and coffee,
03:47can also cause acid reflux.
03:51But if there are foods that are prone to acid reflux,
03:54there are also others that are against it,
03:57such as aloe vera juice and apple cider vinegar.
04:00These have a negative enzyme that is good for digestion.
04:04You can also mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 glass of water
04:09and drink it slowly.
04:11It neutralizes the excess digestive acid in our stomach.
04:16Even though our sleeping habits are affected by acid reflux,
04:21if we are able to lie down immediately after eating,
04:24especially if we are lying down,
04:26it can sometimes be caused by acid reflux.
04:29The right position to sleep is on the left side.
04:34And the upper part of the head is on the body.
04:40Our liver and gallbladder are on the right side of the body.
04:44And when we are on the left side,
04:46fluids come out from the stomach
04:49that helps to neutralize the acids.
04:52The reason why it's like that is because of the location of our esophagus.
04:57Lying down on the left side position will aid gravity
05:02so that our food will go down.
05:07Heart attacks are not only caused by heartache or heart attack.
05:12It can also be caused by acid reflux.
05:16But what's more important to know are the do's and don'ts
05:19so that we can avoid it.
