00:12:24But there are also those who are throwing support behind the J-Temp president's move,
00:12:29like David Forbes, who represents postal workers.
00:12:32Our position is very clear that if there's any organization in Trinidad and Tobago that
00:12:40is pro-workers issues, we will support that political vehicle.
00:12:46Kion Guy of the Fire Service Association says you can just look around and see how workers'
00:12:51rights have diminished over time.
00:12:54It is the duty of the politicians to ensure that they are able to convince every citizen
00:13:02of this country that they are indeed entitled to their vote.
00:13:07So far, the present administration, led by Dr. Keith Rowley, has demonstrated to labor.
00:13:13The farmers' union have been left without a choice, but one thing has to be ensured.
00:13:19We've got to come because signing agreements with them before didn't work.
00:13:23We have to look for some more solid way to come for them to commit, working with the
00:13:29treaty unions and be benefited.
00:13:31When it comes to ACOWU, General Secretary Rudy Atwell is in full support.
00:13:36Because of the posturing and not meeting and treating with negotiations with ACOWU, which
00:13:45is a recognized majority union, that has caused a lot of suffering for the workers.
00:13:53OWTU, of which Roger is also the president-general, supports the meeting with the opposition.
00:13:59And we could not reach Big Wu.
00:14:02Unions we spoke with said they were not aware of any resolution or vote being taken prior
00:14:08to J-Tem's announcement on Wednesday.

00:14:17So we are now joined by political analyst Dr. Mukesh Basdev.
00:14:20Dr. Basdev, thank you very much for joining us this morning.

00:14:24Good morning, Marlon.
00:14:25Good morning to you and yours, and we'll certainly thank you for having me here this morning.
00:14:30Of course, Dr. Basdev.
00:14:31It's always a pleasure speaking with you.
00:14:32Well, Dr. Basdev, I'm sure that you would have heard our report and seen our report
00:14:37there since the announcement on Labor Day of members of the trade union movement wanting
00:14:46to join the United National Congress in unseating the People's National Movement in the next
00:14:51general election.
00:14:52What we are seeing here, Dr. Basdev, apparently it is a division among unions, and there are
00:14:59mixed reviews to that request.
00:15:02Well, clearly, from listening to the report by Urvashi there, we get in a sense that a
00:15:09number of unions, I think from a source, eight of them, have viewed the Constitution to remain
00:15:16politically neutral in any of the situations, discussions, and so forth.
00:15:20However, the other unions, and the statement made by Ms. Ansel Rouget, clearly has indicated
00:15:27that there is a decision and a position has been arrived at to forge some sort of political
00:15:34discussion with political parties.
00:15:38Now, in his statement, he did mention that UNC is one of those political parties that
00:15:43they will be having such discussions.
00:15:46If I recall correctly from the newspaper reporting of yesterday, what I've seen is that the most
00:15:52position, the most firm position that came out of the labor platform on Wednesday was
00:16:00a statement made by the PSA president, where he did, without, let's say, holding back,
00:16:06did indicate that the PSA will be looking to provide what he called political support
00:16:11for the UNC.
00:16:13But Mr. Rouget, as a representative of his organization, his union, and, let's say, JATOM,
00:16:20basically spoke about having broad discussions with what we call political parties in Trinidad
00:16:27and Tobago.
00:16:28Yeah.
00:16:29And, of course, Dr. Bazdeou, alliances between trade unionists and political parties, it's
00:16:34not anything new.
00:16:36Of course, we can speak about the days of Uriah Butler, we can speak about George Weeks,
00:16:42we can speak about the alliance when the People's Partnership won the election.
00:16:51So it's nothing new.
00:16:52But do you think that politics is good, is something that is good for the trade union
00:16:57movement?
00:16:59I think there is, you're quite correct that the, let's say, the relationship between political
00:17:06parties and trade unions goes way back, even back into our colonial days, in that one of
00:17:11us always remember that the first mass base of organization that exists during our colonial
00:17:17time were trade unions.
00:17:18One has to understand, when you go back to the 1920s, labor writers, Cipriani, you have
00:17:23to, you have to see that it was the trade unions that formed what we call the means
00:17:27to what we call representation, whether it be labor, but they also became the voice of
00:17:31the people.
00:17:32And coming out of colonialism into independence, we have seen that there have been relationships
00:17:37between trade unions and political parties.
00:17:41It is not strange to see within the region that a number of trade unions morphed into
00:17:46becoming what we call political parties.
00:17:48So they had two elements, two arms in the political, one foot in the political realm
00:17:53and basically represented what we call the workers.
00:17:58So it's not strange to see it.
00:17:59But in the context of what we are referring to here, it is not a strange phenomenon.
00:18:03I recall back in 1995, then-President of UWT, Ansel Roger, had basically joined Mr.
00:18:12Pandy on the platform.
00:18:13Now, back in 95, we're talking about 95, which was when the UNC was able to win 17 of the
00:18:18seats in that election to forge a coalition with the NAR and the A&R Robinson.
00:18:23But when Mr. McLeod joined Mr.
00:18:27Pandy on the platform, it was to indicate that he stepped onto the platform not to tell
00:18:33his workers or his members, but to actually take a position looking at what is currently
00:18:39happening. Now, looking back at what happened in 95 and what Mr.
00:18:45Roger, there seemed to be a similarity.
00:18:47And what is the similarity?
00:18:49The similarity is what we call social justice, the rights of the workers.
00:18:53And some of the leaders who have made pronouncements, like the PSA president, is
00:18:58clearly seeing that their workers and the workers' rights are under threat and a
00:19:03question of social justice.
00:19:05So it is not strange to see that it has happened in the past.
00:19:08The concept of the UNC has been closely affiliated with some of these movements.
00:19:12One can go back and look at the trade union members or leaders who have been part of the
00:19:17Pandy administration, 95 to 2000, 2000 to 2001.
00:19:21So there's always been this close association.
00:19:24We just need to go back to 2010 when you can have what we call this grand coalition of
00:19:28the People's Partnership.
00:19:30The question is whether or not we are seeing the signals of the possibility of the
00:19:34People's Partnership 2.0.
00:19:36Is it going to be another, let's say, coming into being in the months to come?
00:19:40So as Mr. Roger has indicated, they're going to hold discussion.
00:19:44So one can expect that such issues will come into the public domain, possibly in a week
00:19:49or two time. We'll get a better understanding of this position between what we call is
00:19:54their position, is their political position between the UNC and, let's say, the unions
00:20:01under them we call the labor umbrella.
00:20:03Yeah, excuse me.
00:20:06But Dr. Bazzi, would it be fair to say that the last time the trade union movement or
00:20:13trade unions would have made an impact, a great impact significantly and seriously was
00:20:20when they had this alliance with the United National Congress?
00:20:24And of course, the People's Partnership would have won the election at that time.
00:20:29But since then, do you think that the trade union movement, it still has that level of
00:20:36power that it had during the days of the of the People's Partnership?
00:20:42Well, in the last nine years, we have seen that where, in relation to what we call workers'
00:20:47rights, especially in the area of salary negotiations, there have been significant, let's
00:20:52say, discussions.
00:20:54And so in some cases, there was a level of disappointment.
00:21:00One only has to look at the current situation with the PSA, with their holding out, they
00:21:04have a matter in the courts, may go all the way to the Privy Council for deliberation.
00:21:09So there's a level of what we call disconnect where we think between, let's say,
00:21:16employer-employee. But most of these trade unions that we are speaking about here would
00:21:22have in one form or another have their membership come from the public sector and the
00:21:27public sector representing a significant part of our labor force.
00:21:31So you have to look at it in that context, it may represent both in the private, but in
00:21:37some cases, the public sector and so forth.
00:21:40So like OWT representing workers and NP and TNTEC and so forth.
00:21:45So you have this being and what we are seeing is that the major trade unions in Trinidad
00:21:49and Tobago, without doubt, have the restrictions in their individual constitutions, have
00:21:56made this pronouncement of being what we call they're willing to enter into some sort of
00:22:01political discussion with the parties.
00:22:04Yeah, but I think that the point I was trying to make, Dr.
00:22:08Basdale, is that when the trade union movement or members of the trade union movement
00:22:15had engaged in talks and negotiations and they were part of the people's partnership, of
00:22:21course, the people's partnership would have won the election at that time.
00:22:25So I'm asking that since then, that power, the trade union movement wielded at that time
00:22:31politically.
00:22:33All right. So I'm asking that since then, do you think that in this environment now, you
00:22:39think that politically they still wield such power to make a great impact on the outcome
00:22:48of an election?
00:22:50Well, what we are asking around precisely is whether the conditions of 2010 and the
00:22:56conditions currently in 2024, is it is it is it ideal?
00:23:01Is it ideal in that the trade unions can actually influence their members?
00:23:06Now, I have always maintained and I still maintain that our core individual march in
00:23:12protest, in what we call an engaging protest for, let's say, wages is quite different from,
00:23:17let's say, how they will vote in an election and their support of a political party.
00:23:22So at the end of the day, the trade union, the current trade union arms that have been
00:23:28Mr. Rojan and others who have agreed to enter this negotiation, the question is that
00:23:32whether or not they can convince their members that to enter into this political
00:23:40discussion and to cast a vote for their, for whichever political party that they have
00:23:46decided to actually support politically.
00:23:48It is not to say that you're going to find that the membership of these political
00:23:52parties, 100 percent, are going to vote in a particular manner.
00:23:56It is left to the individual now to decide on how they cast that vote in an election.
00:24:02But is the condition the same?
00:24:04Well, the conditions are not the same that we had back in 2010 to 2024.
00:24:09But what we can see is that when we look at the workers' rights and so forth, primarily
00:24:14in the context where references made to the current 4 percent offer to the workers in
00:24:19the public sector, I mean, these are some of the concerns that the unions are looking
00:24:24at. They're looking at the issue of social justice.
00:24:26And then the UNC has had, as we look back in the past, 2010, 1995, have had some sort
00:24:32of relationships with the trade union.
00:24:34So they share some similarity in the understanding of what is going on with regard
00:24:39to the workers. So it's not to say that it is incorrect, but it's a natural
00:24:44gravitation that we see with the labor movement, members of the labor movement
00:24:48gravitating towards the UNC, because that's happened in the past.
00:24:52The question whether or not it can, this mobilization of the labor movement and its
00:24:58association with a political party, whether it be the UNC, is going to generate what we
00:25:03call a political outcome in their favor.
00:25:06Yeah, the prime minister has responded, the pathway of an alliance between the trade
00:25:11unions and the opposition United National Congress will lead to chaos, confusion,
00:25:16lavish corruption and bitter disappointment, according to the prime minister, he says.
00:25:20What's new? We tasted that flavor in 2010 with great anticipation on the part of many.
00:25:25The only predictable outcome was chaos, confusion, lavish corruption and bitter
00:25:31disappointment.
00:25:33I think the prime minister is referencing there is the coalition style of politics.
00:25:38What emerged in 2010 was a coalition bringing together what we call multiple voices,
00:25:44that when you have a diverse views and opinion and when we talk about what actually
00:25:48emerges, a lack of political consensus and policies and programs that led to what we
00:25:53call what happened in 2015, the votes in 2015.
00:25:57The question is that whether the members of the trade union movement, it seems from the
00:26:02statements that I've heard on Wednesday and read in the newspaper, that they are
00:26:06willing to go into it again and to negotiate.
00:26:11As we say in Trinidad and Tobago, is it a case of where is a water, water, mud and
00:26:16flower in this situation that the trade unions are willing to say, we're going to try
00:26:20the political process once more because of where we were, where the workers' rights
00:26:25and where they can see that the workers' rights are under threat and the issue of
00:26:29social justice, which the UNC is closely affiliated with, that they can actually
00:26:33negotiate a new arrangement.
00:26:37But one would think that they would look back at the experience of 2010 and try to
00:26:43see what can be worked into.
00:26:44Because Mr. Rocha did claim that the attempt is not to create a new political body, a
00:26:50new political party, but to have discussions, because he did indicate that he is a
00:26:56member of the MSG and there is a political party that has emerged out of what we
00:27:02call the trade union movement to represent that.
00:27:06So the question is that whether or not we're going to see now that the elevation of
00:27:10MSG now will become the voice of the labour to sit down with the other political
00:27:14parties, then we're going to understand whether coalition politics is once more on
00:27:19the table for discussion.
00:27:21But Dr. Basdour, is there a risk of alienating some members of the trade union
00:27:32organisations? Because if you take a position that, here's what, we are going to
00:27:38support a political party, a political party, yes, a political party, you have a
00:27:45situation where trade unions are made up of a number of persons with a number of
00:27:50political affiliations.
00:27:52So if a trade union takes the position we are going to support this party, then to me
00:27:58and to other persons out there, I'm sure there could be the risk of alienating a
00:28:04large group of people.
00:28:07Correctly, there's no guarantee that the membership, who pay a membership fee to a
00:28:13trade union, that that will transcend into what we call a political vote in an
00:28:19election. Because it's like, I'm a member of a staff association on the campus, but if
00:28:26my staff association say, take a political stance, but my membership fee is for
00:28:32representation on what we call industrial relation matters, it doesn't extend to say
00:28:37to belong to a political party.
00:28:39So the question is that you have to take it in this context.
00:28:42It all comes back down to the individual, how they will decide and how they will
00:28:47choose whether to take the position or the guidance from their trade union leaders that
00:28:55this is what they consider to be best for the membership by taking a political stance on
00:29:00what we call particular issues and in regard in the next general election.
00:29:05Each individual will have to make that decision.
00:29:08But as we said, the question will be how much of that membership of the working class
00:29:15the trade unions would be able to mobilize and that will transcend into what we call voters in
00:29:22an election. Because we look at it now and look at the elections, that the split between the
00:29:28UNC and the PNM is approximately three seats.
00:29:31The UNC has 19, the PNM has 22, so it's just three seats.
00:29:36And one must also not forget what we call the two Tobago seats in Tobago.
00:29:42Those two seats in Tobago will become what we call critical for any of what we call the
00:29:47political parties.
00:29:48If it is that the two seats were to be lost for the PNM, it will become critical.
00:29:54So any form of alliance or discussion would also have to factor in the Tobago side of the
00:30:02equation. But what do you think that such statements, let's say, of the president of the
00:30:09PSA or the president general of the OWTU, when they make such statements, what do you think
00:30:16the message is for the or to the wider society?
00:30:20And I want to put it in the context of neutrality and independence of the trade union
00:30:28movement or the independence of trade unions.
00:30:31The statements by the president of the PSA and the OWTU is a clear political statement.
00:30:41They have come out and they have made a clear political statement that one, they opposed the
00:30:47current administration headed by Dr.
00:30:49Rowley and the PNM.
00:30:50That was clear in their statement on Wednesday.
00:30:53And that the second is that they are now willing to engage into discussion.
00:30:59The PSA president more so was more clear in his political statement and that we, the PSA,
00:31:05supports the United National Congress.
00:31:07And Mr.
00:31:09Roger now has said, OK, now we're going to engage in the discussion.
00:31:13So clearly they have moved from the point of, let's say, who are we supporting?
00:31:18There's clearly no discussion of who we are supporting.
00:31:20Is that how now they're going to take it into the discussion with the political parties?
00:31:26So Mr.
00:31:27Roger said they're going to have discussions with political elements and political parties in the
00:31:32coming week or weeks to come.
00:31:34So clearly what we can gather from what came out of the platform on Wednesday is that there is an
00:31:40opposition against the current ruling administration headed by Dr.
00:31:45Rowley, that's with the PNM.
00:31:46The question is, in what form, in what manner will this now position be manifest in what we call in
00:31:53the support to the UNC?
00:31:54So that could only come about when we think about the discussion.
00:31:57When will, when they hold discussions, what will be the outcome?
00:32:02Are we going to see that where these trade union leaders will mount a platform with the political
00:32:09leader of the UNC?
00:32:11Or will the UNC now take the opportunity to say, OK, we have had the support, we're getting,
00:32:16gaining the support of the labor movement.
00:32:19Now we have to move into broaden that support.
00:32:21Are we going to see now People's Partnership 2.0 in formation in preparation for the next, the
00:32:28general elections next year?
00:32:30But should the trade union be concerned about its independence, the perception about its
00:32:35independence or neutrality?
00:32:38Well, that would be up to the trade unions, how they're going to manage that position of what we
00:32:44call, as you say, from the news, from the report that was, from the report that you just played
00:32:50there about Oveshee. It is clear that a number of trade unions do have within their constitution
00:32:54and built into their constitution to remain apolitical.
00:32:58That is, become neutral in a political decision or a political situation.
00:33:04Others may not have that positions like PSC and so forth, come out clear and make a make a
00:33:09political statement. And so too is Mr.
00:33:11Oveshee. So yes, you're going to have what we call there will be a divide within the PSC, two
00:33:17for one says apolitical.
00:33:19They're not going to enter into any political arrangement with any political party.
00:33:24So, yes, that currently exists.
00:33:26The question is that what about the others?
00:33:30Now, you may have the tutors and organization remaining apolitical, but it does not mean that
00:33:36the members of TUTOR are not going to vote in an election.
00:33:41The members will be swayed either to vote for one party or another or to remain, like we say, to
00:33:47remain on the political fence and not cast a ballot.
00:33:50So at the end of the day, this coming together, these statements, what it does signal is that
00:33:56for the workers to start to think of a position, what will be their political position in a
00:34:03year's time or whenever the general election is called, the date is set.
00:34:08So it is really signaling that the membership of these eight other unions that Oveshee
00:34:13mentioned that are apolitical, right, it is up to these individuals whether they're going to
00:34:19follow like their colleagues in the other trade unions and are they going to say we're going to
00:34:23support the UNC or any other political vehicle that they have joined to seek for what we call
00:34:30better social justice.
00:34:32That is what is there required in a general election.
00:34:36What can bring for the workers in a general election?
00:34:38Should this be a concern already?
00:34:40Because I'm looking at some of the reports in the newspaper, I'm seeing where certain people are
00:34:47talking about a division in the trade union movement over this issue now.
00:34:51Should we be concerned about any perceived division between trade union leaders and trade
00:34:57union organizations over this issue?
00:35:01Well, the only division that we have that actually came out of Wednesday is where certain
00:35:05statements given by these trade union leaders have been apolitical.
00:35:10So they are not going to take a political position, they're not going to make a political
00:35:13statement. That's the only information that we can go by.
00:35:18Maybe as the weeks go by and these meetings are held, then we can get a clearer picture as to
00:35:24which of the trade unions were going to come on and inform their membership that we are not part
00:35:30of Mr. Oveshee or Mr. Batiste in this attempt to create this so-called grand coalition
00:35:36against Dr. Raouli and his PNM administration.
00:35:41Yeah. Dr. Bazew, any any final thoughts before you leave us this morning?
00:35:46I don't know, Timothy. I'm good for this time.
00:35:49Dr. Bazew, it's always a pleasure speaking with you.
00:35:52I suspect the proof is in the pudding, right?
00:35:54And we look to see what happens in the next few weeks and months.

00:41:00Renric Campbell, chair of the Labre Committee on Sustainable Community Development.
00:41:05Mr. Campbell, thank you very much for joining us this morning.
00:41:08Hi, good morning. Thank you for having me.
00:41:10Yes, of course, Mr. Campbell.
00:41:11Well, you do have two things to speak about, two very important things
00:41:15to speak about this morning concerning Labre.
00:41:18Let's get into it, Mr. Campbell.
00:41:20Hi. Yes.
00:41:21So on the 10th of July, Labre, the Committee
00:41:25for Sustainable Community Development will be having our Labre Economic
00:41:29Development Day, right?
00:41:30This event will be geared towards promoting sustainable business
00:41:37within the community of Labre.
00:41:39It will be a grand affair at the Vesely Secondary School.
00:41:43We have invited the universities, companies
00:41:48and vendors from Labre will be presenting their goods and services
00:41:52to the nation at large.
00:41:54Yeah. Right.
00:41:55And secondly, on the 5th of July,
00:41:58we will have our business pitch competition.
00:42:01And this competition will have been launched two weeks ago.
00:42:05And it's allowed persons within the fence line community of Labre,
00:42:09that's between Soho, Gantrava, Vesely,
00:42:12Rosilac, Labre to, with the help of NEDCO,
00:42:17present their business ideas before a panel of experts
00:42:22and judges.
00:42:23And at the end of the day, it's about promoting business
00:42:26and within the community of Labre.
00:42:28Yeah. But Mr. Campbell, why now?
00:42:30Why are these two events being held now?
00:42:34The Labre Economic Development Day and business pitch competition.
00:42:37Why now?
00:42:40So this is this is happening under the umbrella of the Committee
00:42:45for Sustainable Community Development under the Ministry of Sports
00:42:48and Community Development.
00:42:50And it is one of the things, one of the initiatives that the government
00:42:54has done that is, I think, spectacular.
00:42:58Giving the communities an opportunity to work collaboratively
00:43:02in order to have that development of push within our community
00:43:06has really given Labre an extra energy towards getting these things done.
00:43:11In addition to that, I know the government right now has a push
00:43:14about data driven activities.
00:43:18Last year, they would have initiated an economic assessment
00:43:25of the community of Labre to determine where those gaps are
00:43:29within the community and within business in the community.
00:43:32Out of that activity, we now have this Economic Development Day,
00:43:37which gives, it's supposed to provide an additional push
00:43:40for businesses to develop that micro economy within that community.
00:43:45Yeah. And let's deal with that a little bit, those businesses.
00:43:49And maybe what are some of the interests of residents of Labre
00:43:55when it comes to to setting up businesses in the community?
00:44:00What are they interested in?
00:44:03So Labre is a very vibrant community, especially when it comes to business.
00:44:08Now, some of the businesses that you would see on that date,
00:44:13we have a wide range of food and food businesses.
00:44:18We have artisans who make a lot of interesting items,
00:44:22bars, carvings, you name it, they have it.
00:44:26We have even persons in the technical field who would be presenting
00:44:30the things that they buy and sell.
00:44:31And, you know, it is a very robust community
00:44:36when it comes to the small and medium enterprises.
00:44:39And it is just I'm just glad for the opportunity for those persons
00:44:42to be able to participate.
00:44:44All right. So we do have on the line this morning, we do have a senior policy
00:44:48specialist of the policy unit at the Ministry of Sport and Community
00:44:52Development, Melissa Williams-Campbell.
00:44:54Mrs. Williams-Campbell, good morning.
00:44:56Thank you very much for joining us.
00:44:59A pleasant good morning, Marlon, and thank you for having us.
00:45:03Yes. Well, Mrs. Williams-Campbell,
00:45:07I was speaking to Mr. Campbell about these two initiatives in Labre,
00:45:11the Economic Development Day and the business pitch competition.
00:45:16Could you please tell us about the your ministry's participation
00:45:20in this exercise that we are discussing this morning?
00:45:25Well, Marlon, since 2019,
00:45:28the Ministry of Sports and Community Development
00:45:32has been pursuing the national policy on sustainable community development
00:45:38to address the needs of communities and really to transform communities.
00:45:44Now, this policy was laid in parliament back in 2019.
00:45:49And in essence, it really outlines a pathway
00:45:54for communities to achieve sustainable community development.
00:45:59The approach advocated by this policy is both multisectoral,
00:46:05meaning that it involves different sector coming together
00:46:09as well as whole of government.
00:46:11What is also is important in this policy is that the initiative
00:46:16under this policy primarily in spirit
00:46:20and in practice are supposed to be driven by communities
00:46:24that are in fact driven by communities through the community level
00:46:29committees on sustainable community development.
00:46:32It adopts an evidence based approach, meaning that it's driven
00:46:38by research, it's driven by research as well as it is strategic.
00:46:44It adopts a strategic planning approach, meaning that we are considering
00:46:49we are looking and as Renwick was alluding to, we would have
00:46:52we are looking at the situation in the community,
00:46:56considering the aspiration of the community in the context of it.
00:47:01It needs its assets, right?
00:47:04And assisting or supporting the community to develop
00:47:09plans that will activate their development.
00:47:14But how do communities get involved?
00:47:20We communities get involved now, the policy currently being pilot
00:47:25tested in four communities within Trinidad
00:47:28and one community in Tobago.
00:47:30These communities are Boshishu, Patna Village in Degumatin,
00:47:34Perseverance in Central,
00:47:38Labre, Marabela, and we have the Canaan Bonaparte
00:47:42Crown Point community in Tobago.
00:47:45And within these communities, especially those in Trinidad,
00:47:49we would have set up the committees on sustainable community development
00:47:53to to guide and drive these activities.
00:47:57So is it that your ministry will approach communities
00:48:01or do they have the option communities approaching the ministry?
00:48:09Well, we have a community development division, right?
00:48:12And of course, we are the Ministry of Sports and Community Development.
00:48:15So we are always on ground.
00:48:17We are within communities and we are
00:48:21we allow for this background so communities could approach the ministry
00:48:25as well as the ministry would approach communities,
00:48:28as I indicated, based on the data that that we may have.
00:48:33Right. And on certain communities
00:48:36and where we see that developmental

00:50:49as well as enhance community engagement within the communities. Right.

01:19:40The Youth Camp really is focused on developing young people in technology.
01:19:47You know, a long time we used to say ICT development.
01:19:49There's now so much more than just ICT with AI, cybersecurity, video editing.
01:19:54So what we have is a series of camps.
01:19:56It's three camps happening across the Caribbean,
01:20:00but focusing on Trinidad and Tobago.
01:20:03These camps, participants from age six up can participate virtually.
01:20:09And we're also working along with the Ministry of Digital Transformation,
01:20:13and they're going to have 20 access centers that participants can attend.
01:20:18Now, of course, we use the word youth, but the ministry also is running
01:20:21a preteen, a teen, and then an elderly camp, of which we are also supporting.
01:20:26So anyone can be part of this camp.
01:20:28And why would you want to learn tech?
01:20:29Because everything you're doing in your life is now tech.
01:20:33As Pooja and I demonstrated, we entered a competition,
01:20:36a team with Pooja and two others.
01:20:40They participated, topped Trinidad, topped the Caribbean,
01:20:43and managed to go to the finals in Dubai.
01:20:46And made us proud because they got the Amazon Web Services Innovators Award.
01:20:52So we're so proud of what the youth in Trinidad and Tobago can do,

01:22:06I became involved in this camp because technology is around these days.
01:22:12Everywhere you go, there's always technology.
01:22:15So when I get the opportunity to learn more about technology, I would always do it.

01:22:21So you feel, Pooja, that this is something that you would want to better your studies in
01:22:27and something that you would want to...
01:22:30And then maybe at the end of the day, we can hear, well, Pooja is involved in a real and serious way
01:22:36in the tech industry in Trinidad and Tobago, and she has a big job at this company and so on.
01:22:41That's the plan, Pooja?
01:22:43Yeah.
01:22:46Mr. Ramdas, so tell us, when do these camps begin?
01:22:51Okay, so the camps are actually currently ongoing, one batch.
01:22:55Yes.
01:22:56There's going to be another cohort that is going to start on the 8th of July,
01:22:59and then there's going to be another cohort that's going to start at the end of July,
01:23:03and then also in August.
01:23:05So we do cater for parents that, you know, kids with lessons or doing other stuff
01:23:08or, you know, traveling and coming back.
01:23:10Because like some of the other participants with her, like Sanaya,
01:23:13and then there's this other guy called Lionel, that's how they started.
01:23:16And over the last couple of years, Lionel Clement has moved from a kid with a health issue
01:23:22that cannot go to school to, in my opinion, a kid in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:23:26So participants, we have lots of options.
01:23:29But from the 8th of July is when the next cohort will start.
01:23:32Yeah, and how can people register?
01:23:35You can check out our social media through RSC Tech Club.
01:23:39You can contact your schools because we have a lot of clubs in the schools.
01:23:42You can just, you know, go on the website, any one of the options, and you can register.
01:23:46We do have an orientation session on the day before, which is the 7th.
01:23:51It's optional, but it gives you a guide because you could be in a tech camp,
01:23:54you could be in video editing, you could be in PC repairs, you could be in AI,
01:23:57you could be in cybersecurity if you're not doing the introductory camp.
01:24:01Yeah, but you know, Mr. Ramdas, I mean, judging from what you have told us there,
01:24:09we know the sort of training that the students are going to get.
01:24:13Right.
01:24:14But I want to speak about the impact in a wider sense.
01:24:18Yes.
01:24:19Because I'm sure when a student enters the program, that individual is one way.
01:24:27But when they leave, I'm sure that you see a transformation, right?
01:24:32Correct.
01:24:33The thing is, we branded tech camp, but what we really run is tech clubs,
01:24:39the camp being an entry into the program because learning tech is absolutely necessary,
01:24:44but the reality is application of tech in a safe manner and opportunities as young kids,
01:24:50as older people, to apply the tech is what we bring to the table.
01:24:54So we have a massive volunteer program.
01:24:57So kids would learn, they get to apply in a controlled environment,
01:25:02and then they get a chance to do pseudo-internships.
01:25:04Right.
01:25:05So the camp is going to go July, August, yes, but like Sanaya and Pooja and all these people,
01:25:10they tend to come and stay with us for years because it's a development process.
01:25:14We also support in academia.
01:25:16A lot of the students who come through our camps and our clubs, they excel in academia
01:25:20because it's a matter of being motivated and liking what you do, and everything starts to work for you.
01:25:26Yes, and I think that is what I was getting at because I'm sure it does something mentally to that student, right?
01:25:33And it gives the student a certain type of drive and critical thinking.
01:25:38Correct.
01:25:39Because we hear a lot of adults guilty of things like gaming bot, AI bot, this bot, the next bot,
01:25:45and yet they use it to babysit their children.
01:25:48But then if we put our kids in a controlled environment, all of these are super advantages.
01:25:53Right now, the education system has been rocked with AI.
01:25:56Are we going to fight it?
01:25:58Are we going to figure out ways of it enhancing what we are doing?
01:26:03And I think, you know, Mr. Ramdas, I think that, and of course, AI has been with us for so long.
01:26:09A long time.
01:26:10But I think in recent years, AI was given a bad name, right?
01:26:14Correct.
01:26:15And you had some commentators saying, well, AI is going to replace all of us.
01:26:20And now I see that the narrative is changing.
01:26:23People are asking for protections and controls to be put in place and so on.
01:26:28But my point is, it is something that we are going to have to embrace.
01:26:31Otherwise, you do have the potential that countries, small countries like Trinidad and Tobago, that they are going to be left behind.
01:26:38Correct.
01:26:39Because people need to understand, it's not AI will rule the world.
01:26:42It's people who use AI will rule people who don't use AI.
01:26:47So the Samantha's that the world will control.
01:26:49Yeah.
01:26:50So, Pooja, so what's the next step for you now?
01:26:57That you all have done so well in Dubai.
01:27:00And I'm sorry that you didn't bring the award because I would have liked to see the award.

01:27:14So this is something that you plan to pursue in the future.

01:27:46We are across like 10 countries in the Caribbean.

01:27:50The next part of this competition is going to be 2025.
01:27:54We don't know where yet.
01:27:55It's going to be either Indonesia or India.
01:27:58And we would like to carry at least 10 teams from the Caribbean.
01:28:01So part of this camp is training you to be able to compete in the regional, which will start in October.
01:28:06And next year, May, we'll have 10 teams going to either India or Indonesia.
01:28:11And this time we're not coming back with one trophy.
01:28:13We're going to come back and wave banners and everything else.

01:28:17But how do you choose those students?
01:28:19It's going to be a competition.

01:28:21Yeah, so they will have to be part of teams.
01:28:23And then we'll have probably top three teams from each country.
01:28:26There will be 10 countries in the Caribbean participating.

01:29:17Well, basically, we would have grown organically over the years.
01:29:20We started off by doing stuff with kids in hotspot areas, crime areas, and so on.
01:29:25We are heavy into tech, and we are heavy into environment.
01:29:29So we do plastic projects, tree planting projects.
01:29:32We do e-waste projects.
01:29:34But it's all tied to getting activities that kids who learn tech could participate in.
01:29:39So it's really a club.
01:29:40And, of course, we have lots of competition.
01:29:41So it's a club model.
01:29:43We say youth, but we have club members as 60, 65 in the clubs.
01:29:47Yeah.
01:29:48And how can people participate?
01:29:50Is it on a voluntary basis?
01:29:53People can participate in that way?
01:29:55Well, you come in to train.

01:29:57And then based on your performance in training and the different types of training that happen, then you could qualify to become a volunteer.

01:30:06Is there anything that the wider community can do to contribute to the work that you all are doing?
01:30:12Oh, definitely.
01:30:13Because a huge project we do is we collect used computer systems, refurbish these systems as part of the training,
01:30:20and then donate them back into schools and schools.
01:30:24So whether you want donations of machines or whether you want to give us your old machines, that is definitely something that public support.
01:30:30I mean, it's a good project.
01:30:32We did, like, 3,000 units over the last, say, three years.
01:30:35So that is something definitely can support us.

01:50:45And the deceased was from south Trinidad.
01:50:48Of course, he didn't want to give further information as it relates to the family and so on.
01:50:55But again, he's asking you and the ministry of health is asking you to go around your house, go around your yard.

01:51:05Yeah. Look out for where you have stagnant water and try to remove that stagnant water and remove the mosquitoes.
01:51:13If there are mosquitoes on your property, because as you know, dengue can result in death.
01:51:20Yeah. And, you know, be aware of the symptoms, too.
01:51:24Don't just get fever or feel pain around the eyes and rashes on your skin and so on.
01:51:31And think, well, everything is OK. I'll drink some fever grass.
01:51:35You know, they like to do that. I'll drink some fever grass and everything will be OK.
01:51:39But dengue has a very, very bad impact on your body.

01:53:55And as a result of that, people began to walk because people realized that it would take some time before all the buses would have come and pick up the people.

01:54:08It didn't they were they were not well organized for the for the path to take people back to the to the path.

01:54:19Not the people. I find there's a tendency to blame the people when the organization fell short of doing the necessary.
