The first leather-back turtle hatchlings on Maracas Beach occurred early this morning, with baby turtles successfully making their way into the sea as they embark on their new journey of life. The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries is reminding the public that these marine species are protected by law, and harm of these animals can result in hefty penalties. 00:00Sea turtle nesting season began on March 1st and runs until August 31st and
00:05according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, all five species of
00:10marine turtles visit TNT shores including the leatherback turtle, green
00:16turtle, loggerhead, olive ridley and hawksbill and they are all protected by
00:22law. As such the ministry is urging beach goers to exercise caution and refrain
00:27from partaking in activities that may interrupt their nesting such as biking
00:33or driving vehicles on the beach, building sand castles or mining beach
00:38sand. Persons are also advised to avoid the use of flambos, fires, headlights or
00:44any bright lights along the shoreline at night. Above all persons are reminded to
00:49refrain from sitting on the turtles as this can cause serious harm to their
00:53organs which may even result in death. The penalties for causing harm to sea
00:59turtles include a fine of $100,000 and a two-year jail term.
