A military parade through the streets of Siparia on Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the area attaining borough status.

The festivities began on Thursday with an inter-faith service and will see multiple events over the next few weeks, including a J'ouvert event next week.

Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh was in Siparia for the parade and gives us a look at the day’s events.

01:31 can live in harmony and live out of fear because people are locked in their homes, they are
01:36 afraid of what is happening with the criminals in society today and taking away that, Trinidad
01:41 will be a beautiful place in this world.
01:44 He says during his first year as mayor, there was a lot of planning taking place and in
01:51 this, his second year, he aims to make good on his promises to upgrade and/or improve
01:57 the Irwin Park facility, the market and cremation site.
02:02 As for borough celebrations moving forward, Mayor Meru says after this year's calendar
02:08 of events is tried and tested, citizens can look forward to bigger and grander celebrations
