00:00 An academic has deemed the Home Ministry's new film censorship guidelines as a reactionary
00:06 response to recent controversies involving local films.
00:10 Guyk Cheng Khoo of the University of Nottingham said the guidelines appear to target liberals
00:15 by micromanaging certain aspects of films.
00:18 She pointed out that Section 2.1.1 of the guidelines imposed restrictions on content
00:23 involving religious pluralism, liberalism and other subjective religious themes.
00:29 Guyk said these restrictions would inhibit the growth of society and that a cosmopolitan
00:34 and open society such as Singapore's was key in attracting creatives.
00:39 Independent filmmaker Badrul Hisham Ismail agreed, saying the new guidelines restrict
00:43 filmmakers' creativity and the right of viewers to watch quality films.
00:48 Badrul also accused the government of acting as a "guardian" to suppress independent
00:52 thought among Malaysians.
00:55 He said art should not be tasked with upholding the government as it is a space for dialogue
00:59 on issues experienced by society.
