00:00It's a warm Tuesday afternoon and senior citizens Alex Liu and Serene Lee are in their rented

00:11Suntthul flat with their family. The space is cramped at just 300 square feet, but for

00:18their five grandchildren, it's where they sleep, eat and study. It's not the most comfortable

00:26of living conditions, but this is the only place the family can afford. Liu and Lee have

00:33been taking care of Audrey, Kenneth, Nicholas, Siobhan and Vivian for almost 13 years, ever

00:40since their parents left the family. Now, the retired couple is seeking financial aid to

00:48help their family get by.

00:51We hope that the children can be brought up, people can sponsor their education, and then

00:56we have a place to set a proper place, bigger house for them, so they can move around, you

01:03see. Looks like now, they come around, it's all sweet, see.

01:08Liu and Lee sustain themselves on monthly welfare support of 900 ringgit, along with additional

01:14help from the Suriana Welfare Society. Most of this goes towards food and school fees for

01:22their grandchildren who have to take turns studying at small tables as the flat is too cramped to

01:28accommodate a large table for all of them. Parts of their residence, such as the bathroom

01:34door, are in disrepair and the flat has little protection from the elements. Water pours right

01:40into their home during heavy rain. Liu and Lee even go without breakfast to make sure their family

01:49has enough to eat all day. To complicate matters, they suffer from health issues which further strain

01:58their finances. Liu has heart problems, while Lee has high blood pressure and diabetes. Meanwhile, the girls

02:06have to take the bus to school, which eats into the family's already meagre finances. Despite all this,

02:13the grandchildren are doing well academically. Audrey, the eldest, is a straight-A student who hopes to

02:20further her studies. All of them participate in co-curricular activities, with Nicholas being a

02:27school volleyball player. I hope they come out good, where they can get their own living and all that,

02:36earn their own living. Because we can't support anything, we have nothing to give them, you see.
