00:00 I can't tell you the name of the accused murderer yet for legal reasons, but he did appear in
00:06 court for the first time today and he was in person, not via video link.
00:11 He's been charged with murder and several other offenses that police allege were domestic
00:15 violence related.
00:18 Today in court it was really just procedural.
00:20 His matter has been adjourned until August while police continue their investigations
00:25 into what happened over the alleged murder on Saturday in Coconut Grove in Darwin.
00:31 But today was the first time that we got to hear from family members of both the accused
00:35 and the alleged victim here at Darwin Court.
00:38 The courtroom is full of friends of family, many of whom had traveled from the remote
00:43 Arnhem Land community of Maningrida here to Darwin for today.
00:47 They said that they're experiencing both grief, anger and confusion as they know and some
00:53 of the family members related to both of the people involved in this incident.
00:58 So they're both grieving the loss of a woman who has died while experiencing anger and
01:03 confusion at what the accused has potentially done.
01:08 We can share the alleged victim's name.
01:10 She goes by Ms. Galminder.
01:13 We can't share her first name for cultural reasons, but we know more and more about who
01:17 she was.
01:18 We spoke to one of her good friends outside court who said that she was friendly, kind
01:24 and a person who always had respect for other people.
01:27 She was from Maningrida.
01:28 She was a Djungai woman.
01:30 Her community say that she was on track to become a local leader or even a director of
01:35 the Dukadji Development Corporation, which oversees the traditional owners of Maningrida.
01:40 We've also heard from her workplace.
01:43 She was an Australian Army soldier.
01:46 She was serving with the Northwest Mobile Force, more commonly known as Norforce.
01:51 They have released a statement saying that her unit and the wider defence community in
01:55 general are all grieving her loss as well.
01:58 The police investigations are still ongoing.
02:00 The matter has been adjourned until April.
02:02 We'll be keeping an eye out to see how this case develops.
