00:03 In Mexico, polls open on Sunday's general elections.
00:16 Citizens both in country and abroad
00:18 continue to go to the polls to decide
00:20 the future of the nation.
00:23 In Palestine, Israel's general election against Gaza
00:26 raises to 140th day as occupation forces continue
00:30 to tax on Gaza.
00:33 And in Iran, former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
00:36 registered his candidacy for June 28th
00:39 early presidential elections.
00:40 Hello, welcome from the south.
00:48 I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesos studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:52 We begin with the news.
00:54 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:57 Mexicans living abroad are heading to their countries
01:09 consulates to exercise their right to vote and elect
01:11 the new president of Mexico and other federal officials.
01:14 The National Electoral Institute of Mexico
01:16 announced that close to 23 polling stations
01:21 are installed in the European cities of Madrid and Paris,
01:24 open at 8 AM and will close at 6 PM local time.
01:28 The Mexican electoral authority also
01:30 stated they set up 20 stations in the United States
01:32 and one in Canada.
01:34 In this regard, it is also worth noting
01:36 that electronic and postal voting are also underway.
01:39 In this context, the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel López
01:47 Alvarado, exercises his right to vote in the country's
01:49 general elections.
01:51 The largest in national history, accompanied by his wife,
01:54 Beatriz Gutiérrez Muller.
01:55 The president voted at a polling station
01:57 installed in the Art Museum, the historic center in Mexico City.
02:01 Afterwards, he was greeted by applause
02:02 from the people gathered outside who expressed their love
02:05 and support for the head of state.
02:06 In the current elections, approximately 100 million
02:09 citizens are called to exercise their constitutional right
02:13 at around 170,000 polling stations.
02:16 Voters will be able to elect more than 20,000 positions,
02:19 including the president of the republic, 500 deputies, 128
02:22 senators, and nine governorships.
02:24 As polls open in Mexico for Sunday's general elections,
02:32 citizens continue to go to the polls
02:34 to elect the next president of the republic, lawmakers,
02:37 or local authorities.
02:38 Over 100 million Mexicans are registered to vote
02:45 for 20,708 public offices.
02:49 This will be the first time that federal elections are held
02:52 with the participation of 32 states.
02:54 The Mexican people will also vote
02:59 for the head of state for the 2024-2030 term,
03:03 as well as 128 senators and 500 federal deputies.
03:07 On this day, local elections will also
03:13 be held to choose 19,738 positions, comprising
03:17 nine governorships, 1,098 assembly members, 1,802
03:23 municipal presidencies, 431 auxiliary positions,
03:27 1,975 union seats, and 14,423 local council members.
03:33 Regarding overseas voting, the National Electoral Institute
03:40 reported that more than 12 million Mexicans
03:43 are eligible to cast their vote from May 20,
03:47 either online, by mail, or in person
03:49 at different polling stations set up at Mexican embassies.
03:52 According to the electoral regulations,
03:59 voting will end at 6 PM local time,
04:02 provided that there are not citizens in line to vote.
04:07 Let's now review the profile of position candidate Xochitl
04:10 Galvez running for the coalition Strength and Heart for Mexico.
04:14 Xochitl Galvez is a 61-year-old computer engineer, business
04:17 woman, and Mexican politician.
04:19 Galvez was in charge of the Office for the Development
04:21 of Indigenous Peoples.
04:23 She was candidate for governor of the state of Hidalgo
04:26 and served as senator of the country in 2018.
04:29 In her political career, Xochitl Galvez
04:31 was accused of allegedly plagiarizing her work degree
04:34 at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
04:37 She was the general director of the National Commission
04:39 for Indigenous Peoples in 2003.
04:41 During the second debate, she added
04:43 that there are still millions of people in state of poverty
04:45 in the country.
04:46 We now have candidate Jorge Alvarez Mainez,
04:56 a 38-year-old Mexican internationalist and politician
04:59 that's running for the Citizens Movement Party.
05:01 Alvarez proposes the demilitarization
05:03 of public security, the autonomy of the judiciary,
05:06 a universal pension system with a gender perspective,
05:09 and guaranteed access to banking services.
05:12 In his speech during the second debate,
05:13 he called for resolving security without militarization,
05:17 revolutionizing the energy field, having a water plan,
05:20 and advancing an education revolution.
05:22 Alvarez began his political career
05:24 as a militant of the Democratic Revolution Party in 2003.
05:28 He was president of the Municipal Strengthening
05:30 Commission and served as federal deputy
05:32 of the Congress of the Union.
05:33 And finally, we have the profile of Claudia Shane Bound
05:41 for the Let's Continue Making History coalition.
05:44 Shane Bound is a 61-year-old politician and scientist.
05:48 In 2018, she became the first woman
05:50 elected head of government of Mexico City
05:52 with more than 47% of the vote.
05:56 Claudia Shane Bound's government proposals
05:58 include fair salaries for the education sector,
06:00 the strengthening of the National Guard,
06:01 and the creation of medical clinics
06:03 in 154 municipalities of the capital city that
06:06 do not have the service.
06:08 Among her proposals are the continuity
06:10 of the lines of the fourth transformation of the republic,
06:13 which proposes an honest model with better salaries
06:16 and pensions without increasing taxes in the country.
06:18 And in South Africa, after nearly all the battles
06:27 have been counted, the ruling African National Congress
06:29 has received a setback in Wednesday's elections
06:32 after losing the absolute parliamentary majority
06:34 for the first time in 30 years.
06:37 According to the Independent Electoral Commission,
06:39 while still at the top of the votes,
06:41 the ANC obtained 40.2% of popular support,
06:44 a stark difference compared to the 2019 elections.
06:47 The outcome means the ruling party
06:49 will need to form a coalition to govern or try
06:52 to structure a minority government that would make
06:54 it difficult to pass any legislation.
06:56 In turn, the opposition parties have
06:58 described the outcome as a transcendental advance
07:01 in the country's democracy.
07:02 The official results will be announced on Monday
07:04 by the Electoral Commission.

09:25 And the Palestinian Detainees Affairs Authority
09:32 and Prisoner Society reported that Israeli occupational forces

09:37 In this regard, the agency reported
09:38 that detentions took place in seven governorates,

09:45 physically assaulted the abductees and their families,
09:48 in addition to vandalizing and destroying their homes.
09:51 Meanwhile, in Israel, policemen repressed
09:57 a protest that demanded the resignation of Prime Minister
10:00 Benjamin Netanyahu on an agreement guaranteeing
10:02 the return of citizens held in the Gaza Strip.
10:05 Police officers on horseback charged against protesters
10:08 in Tel Aviv, where some 120,000 people demonstrated
10:12 to demand that the government accept the ceasefire agreement
10:15 announced Friday by US President Joe Biden.
10:18 According to local media, at least seven people
10:21 were arrested during the incident.
10:23 The protests, which were replicated in several cities,
10:25 also demanded the resignation of the ultra-white wing,
10:28 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
10:30 and the holding of early elections.
10:33 [CHILDREN SCREAMING]
10:36 In Peru, hundreds of activists marched to the Israeli embassy
10:48 in Lima to denounce the crimes against the Palestinian
10:51 population in the Gaza Strip.
10:52 A protest held on Saturday was attended

10:57 Students and members of pro-Palestinian groups
11:00 once at the gates of the embassy, which
11:01 were guarded by the police of Lima,
11:04 demonstrators placed children, shoes, toys, and flowers
11:08 on the sidewalk of the building to denounce
11:10 the thousands of children murdered by the Zionist entity.
11:13 Similar demonstrations took place
11:14 during the day in different cities,
11:16 such as Paris, Berlin, Jakarta, among others.
11:19 The objects placed in front of the embassy
11:29 represent children killed in the Palestinian territories.
11:32 The flowers also have to do with the deaths of innocents
11:35 that are occurring today in Gaza.
11:38 The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric,
11:40 announced his country's adhesion to the lawsuit filed
11:42 by South Africa against Israel before the International
11:45 Court of Justices.
11:46 On Saturday, the Chilean head of state

12:12 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
12:15 Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

13:43,
14:13 Welcome back.
14:14 We return live to Mexico with a special envoy, Pablo Montero,
14:17 for the latest updates on Sunday's key general elections
14:20 that is being held in Mexico.
14:22 Pablo, what can you tell us?
14:23 Hi, Luis.
14:30 Good morning.
14:31 So far, so good.
14:32 There were no incidents.
14:34 The polls have been open almost for three hours.
14:37 Already the three candidates to the president,
14:40 so Steele Gargis for the opposition party,
14:45 Claudia Schreiber for the official party,
14:50 and Jorge Maines for the third party.
14:53 They already vote.
14:54 Also, the president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador,
14:58 went to vote.
14:58 They went early, half an hour, between half an hour
15:02 and one hour after the polls opened.
15:05 It was really a historic place today to be in Mexico,
15:09 because we are being witness of history.
15:13 We can say these are the most important election
15:17 in the history of this country, not only because there
15:20 is a big chance that a woman be for the first time
15:24 president of this country.
15:25 Also, there are 99 million of people--
15:29 never there were so many people allowed to vote in Mexico.
15:33 There are 20,000 public officials
15:36 that are going to be here.
15:37 They have to decide between them.
15:39 But also, we have to say that there were the last few months,
15:43 there were violence.
15:46 Based on numbers of the government,
15:48 we have almost 30 people, candidates.
15:51 They lost their life.
15:53 Let's see how the Mexican reacts so far today
15:57 when they go to the polls, go to vote.
15:59 They've been doing that in Europe, too.
16:01 They were in Paris.
16:04 There were a lot of people in the embassy waiting
16:07 to vote, also in Madrid.
16:09 Madrid, there were some problems with the process
16:12 that some of them, they got really upset.
16:14 They were screaming, we want to vote.
16:17 But of course, the studio USA is the most important place
16:24 where we have to be at attention.
16:25 We have to be very careful to see how many people are
16:29 going to vote.
16:30 6 o'clock, they are going to close the polls.
16:35 We are going to have the exit poll.
16:37 Then in one hour, we are going to have--
16:40 they have to have numbers.
16:41 Here, they call about the numbers and election.
16:45 And then two hours later, we are going
16:47 to see who are the preliminary results.
16:50 More probably, tonight, we are going
16:53 to have somebody of the three candidates
16:55 celebrating in the Zócalo.
16:57 Zócalo is a very emblematic square
17:00 here in Ciudad de México, where the candidates go
17:04 when they win an election over there.
17:07 We are going to be paying attention to everything
17:10 that's going here.
17:11 And we are going to go back to you with that information.
17:14 But so far, so good.
17:16 No problems.
17:17 The election is going smooth.
17:19 Going back to the studios.
17:21 Thank you, Carlos, for the latest updates.
17:23 And of course, we want to continue
17:24 to tune with the general elections that
17:26 are being held in Mexico.
17:28 From now, we are moving on with our news.
17:29 In Budapest, Hungary, demonstrators and government
17:32 authorities held a peace march aimed
17:34 at stopping the European Union from entering
17:36 into a war with Russia.
17:38 In this context, the prime minister of Hungary, Viktor
17:40 Orbán, attached importance to preventing Europe
17:43 from rushing into a war which could potentially
17:45 destroy the continent.
17:46 The prime minister also referred to the attack
17:48 on the life of his Slovakian counterpart, Robert Fico,
17:51 and assured that the attempt occurred because Fico
17:53 is on the side of peace.
17:55 Orbán, who is focusing his June 9 elections campaign
17:58 on stepping back from the Russia-Ukraine conflict,
18:01 has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine
18:03 and threatened to derail the European Union's financial aid
18:06 to Kiev and block sanctions against Moscow.
18:08 We have the largest electoral army.
18:22 No one has ever been able to gather so many people for peace.
18:25 As the only purpose of the electoral army of Hungarians
18:28 is to keep peace, we are the largest peace corps in Europe.
18:31 We are the largest peacekeeping force in Europe.
18:33 Russia's anti-aircraft defense system
18:46 shot down Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles approaching
18:49 the city of Belgorod.
18:50 According to local authorities, the airstrike
18:52 by the Ukrainian armed forces caused damage
18:54 to the infrastructure of four residential houses.
18:57 A fire was also reported in a private residential building,
19:00 and a car was hit by a fragment of destroyed drones as well.
19:03 The province of Belgorod is affected by constant incursions
19:06 of sabotage groups from Ukraine in recent months
19:09 and continuous attacks on border municipalities
19:11 with the use of multiple rocket launchers, mortars, and drones.
19:14 Russia and Ukraine announced Friday
19:22 that they had exchanged dozens of prisoners of war
19:24 in one of the only areas of dialogue
19:26 between the belligerent countries.
19:28 Despite large-scale hostilities, the two sides
19:30 have conducted more than 50 prisoner exchanges
19:32 since Russia launched the special denazification
19:35 operation against Ukraine more than two years ago.
19:38 The latest exchanges have been hampered by demands
19:41 from both sides and following the breakdown in January
19:43 of a Russian plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners
19:46 to an exchange point.
19:47 The Russian Defense Ministry said
19:48 it had secured the release of 75 of its servicemen, who
19:51 it claimed were in mortal danger being held in Ukraine.
19:55 Moscow also confirmed it had returned 75 Ukrainian servicemen
19:58 to Kiev and claimed that the United Arab Emirates had
20:01 mediated the exchange as it had in previous swaps.
20:04 And during the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore,
20:13 China's Defense Minister Dong Yun accused governments
20:15 in the region of violating bilateral agreements
20:18 under the instigation of external forces.
20:24 "There are some countries that, under the instigation
20:26 of external forces, have broken bilateral agreements,
20:30 violated their own commitments, deliberately provoked
20:33 troubles, created false impressions, misled the public,
20:37 even disregarded regional countries' overall interests
20:40 and gone against the spirit of the ASEAN Charter
20:43 to comply with external powers and deploy
20:45 medium-range ballistic missiles in the region,
20:48 severely damaging regional security and stability."
20:52 The Chinese officials who stated the Israeli aggression on Gaza
20:55 highlighted the need to continue strengthening
20:58 international law.
21:01 "The current round of conflict between Palestine and Israel
21:04 has created a humanitarian disaster
21:06 that will be difficult to heal, and double standards
21:09 have had a severe impact on international fairness
21:12 and justice.
21:14 These painful lessons warn us that the authority of the UN
21:17 must only be enhanced, not weakened,
21:19 and international law must be respected, not contravened."
21:24 The Chinese spacecraft landed on the far side of the moon
21:27 on Sunday to collect soil and rock
21:29 samples that could provide insight
21:31 into the next explored area.
21:33 In this sense, China's National Space Administration
21:35 indicated this mission is the sixth in the Shanxi Moon
21:38 Exploration Program, named after a Chinese moon goddess.
21:42 The trip is the second one designed
21:44 to bring back samples from the Shanxi V, which did so
21:47 from the near side in 2020.
21:50 The successful landing elevates China's space power status
21:52 in a global race to the moon, in which several countries,
21:55 including the United States, hope to exploit lunar minerals.
21:57 "I am a woman who never, ever fails to deliver."
22:16 And this Saturday, Real Madrid set a new milestone,
22:18 winning its 15th UEFA Champions League title,
22:21 sixth in the last decade.
22:23 Only Dogba Rui and Dortmund came out
22:24 strong in the first 15 minutes of the game,
22:26 having three clear chances to open the score,
22:29 with a great return to Bogotá and the far post
22:31 to deny Dortmund the prize.
22:33 Returning to the pitch for the second half,
22:35 Real Madrid brought their game to the top,
22:36 led by a relentless Vinicius Junior
22:38 to awake the Vikings' offensive play.
22:40 In a very Real Madrid fashion, in the last 15 minutes,
22:43 Dani Carvajal put Madrid in front in style in a set-piece action
22:47 from a corner kick, and Vinicius Junior was in charge
22:50 of putting the cherry on the cake,
22:52 with a great finish from Madrid bending an assist.
22:54 Like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
