Ireland is to formally recognise the state of Palestine, Taoiseach Simon Harris has announced. The Irish premier said the country is joining Norway and Spain in making the historic move.Shortly before Mr Harris made the announcement outside Government Buildings in Dublin, Israel recalled its ambassador in Ireland, accusing the country of undermining its sovereignty and endangering its security.“Today Ireland, Norway and Spain are announcing that we recognise the state of Palestine,” said Mr Harris.“Each of us will now undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision.”The Taoiseach said he was confident other countries would now follow the move taken by Ireland, Spain and Norway in the coming weeks.“This is an historic and important day for Ireland and for Palestine,” he added.

00:00 Today we are taking a significant political step. There will be reaction,
00:06 there will be interpretations of its implications, but let us not lose sight
00:10 of this fundamental truth. Children are innocent, the children of Israel, the
00:15 children of Palestine, they deserve peace. It is long past time for a ceasefire, for
00:22 the unconditional release of hostages, for unhindered access, for humanitarian
00:27 aid. There should be no further military incursion into Rafa, there should be no
00:31 more Hamas or Hezbollah rockets fired at Israel. Civilians on all sides must be
00:38 protected by international humanitarian law. Violence and hatred can only ever be
00:45 a dead end. The only pathway to peace is political. The people of Palestine
00:51 deserve a future filled with hope, a future defined by success instead of
00:56 suffering, a future at peace. The people of Israel deserve the exact same thing.
01:02 Today's decision to recognize Palestine is taken to help create a peaceful
01:08 future. A two-state solution is the only way out of the generational cycles of
01:14 violence, retaliation and resentment, where so many wrongs can never make a right.
