00:00Should Australia adopt a register of convicted family violence offenders?
00:06By not informing women of the violent past of a partner,
00:11when we have that information available,
00:14is knowingly putting women in harm's way.
00:17This is one of the proposals politicians are being asked to ponder
00:21in the wake of at least 27 women
00:24allegedly killed by male violence this year alone.
00:28We stay home with our partners because surely we're safe,
00:31but when nobody's looking, one of us dies every five days.
00:36Victoria Police submitted the register idea
00:39to the Royal Commission into Family Violence almost 10 years ago.
00:43It was not among the 227 total recommendations
00:47that were implemented by 2023.
00:50Our officers are responding to 140,000 jobs every year.
00:56That equates to about one job every four minutes,
00:59and it actually takes about 60% of the police workload
01:03responding to domestic violence incidences.
01:06All Australian states and territories have a sex offender register
01:10which holds details of convicted child sexual offenders
01:13but is not made public.
01:15Other ideas, such as perpetrator tracking,
01:18ankle bracelets and disclosure registers,
01:21have also been highlighted after the PM called
01:24an urgent National Cabinet meeting on male violence against women.
01:28Data sharing was certainly on the agenda
01:30and something that everyone was keen on progressing.
01:34We really have to make sure that men respect women
01:38and that men do not respect other men who disrespect women.
01:42So there's a huge role in this for men.
01:45They're not just the perpetrators,
01:47they're also the friends and relatives, employers, employees,
01:50colleagues of men who commit these crimes,
01:53and they have to be held to account.
