00:12 In Gaza, the number of Palestinians killed so far amounts to 28,473,
00:18 although a higher figure is estimated because many are under the rubble.
00:24 According to the UN, criminal groups in Haiti are increasing their activity.
00:31 And Indian authorities deployed a harsh security mechanism
00:34 against the march of thousands of farmers to New Delhi,
00:38 who demand protection of prices of their crops.
00:45 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:47 My name is Belén de los Santos and from the Telesur studios in Havana, Cuba,
00:51 we begin with the news.
00:54 [Music]
01:10 Israel is perpetrating the most heinous massacre in the century.
01:14 The number of Palestinians killed so far amounts to 28,473,
01:19 although a higher figure is estimated because many are under the rubble.
01:23 The Gazan authorities have delivered a new report of the victims of the genocidal operation.
01:28 In the last 24 hours, the occupying troops committed 16 massacres in the Palestinian enclave,
01:34 killing 133 civilians and injuring 162 others.
01:39 According to the Register, the number of wounded amounts to 68,146.
01:46 Both killed and injured are mostly women and children.
01:50 It is estimated that they represent more than 80% of the victims of this genocide.
01:55 The number of bodies under the rubble, missing and kidnapped,
01:58 could overwhelmingly raise the statistics.
02:05 On Tuesday, the Ezzat-e-Nal Qassam Brigades,
02:08 a military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas,
02:12 announced in their social networks telegram that Syianist occupation forces killed three Israeli citizens.
02:18 In this regard, the Ezzat-e-Nal Qassam Brigades stressed that the three dead Israeli citizens
02:23 were among the eight captives who were seriously wounded in the raids of the Gaza Strip.
02:29 On the other hand, the statement stressed that the identity of the victims
02:32 targeted by the military attacks of its own government will be revealed
02:38 as soon as they know the medical conditions of the wounded,
02:42 a situation that has been worsening in recent hours
02:45 due to the lack of medical supplies and medicines to assist them.
02:52 The city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip is devastated after the Israeli occupation army
02:57 bombing in the night of this February 12th.
03:00 For the most populated area of the Gaza Strip,
03:03 our correspondent Nur Kharasin sends us all the details.
03:07 Evacuation efforts continue here in Rafah following one of the most deadly nights in this city
03:16 that is the most densely populated area in Gaza.
03:20 Now, as you can see behind me, this is one of the homes that were targeted in the Israeli airstrikes
03:26 and the bulldozers are actually trying to move some of the rubble
03:34 just to check if there is someone alive still under the rubble.
03:39 This is actually a very hard and also expensive thing to do
03:44 as fuel now in Gaza is very expensive
03:48 and it is rarely entering the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border.
03:53 However, the families do have hope, so they have to do it
03:58 in the sake of evacuating the bodies of those who got killed
04:03 and those who are still alive under the rubble.
04:07 According to the Palestinian Health Ministry,
04:10 the number of people who were killed in Gaza since the 7th of October is now over 28,500
04:20 and we are talking also about more than 8,000 people that are missing.
04:26 So, as we mentioned many times before, we are talking about a catastrophic number,
04:33 more than 35,000 people were killed in Gaza since the 7th of October.
04:42 People here on the ground actually are shocked by the number
04:45 and they are shocked by the silence of the international community
04:49 because people here on the ground did have hope that the world, the international community,
04:56 the Arab and Muslim countries will somehow intervene
04:59 and stop this really inhumane war on Gaza
05:03 and also stop Israel's starvation war on the coastal enclave,
05:09 Nur Harazin, Tirisur, Gaza.
05:12 Palestinian local media reported on Monday that Israeli forces
05:17 left more than 200 dead in Gaza after carrying out more than 50 airstrikes
05:22 against the city of Rafah during the last 24 hours.
05:25 The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that 67 dead have arrived at health care centers
05:31 while operations are still underway to recover the dead.
05:34 The Health Ministry reported that the work has been delayed
05:37 due to the lack of equipment and the destruction in the area.
05:40 Authorities pointed out that during the bombardment,
05:43 the Taliban destroyed more than 14 houses and set fire to the Al-Quda Mosque,
05:48 which would confirm the use of internationally banned weapons.
05:52 About 7,000 Palestinians have been arrested by the Israeli army and police in the West Bank
06:04 since the beginning of the attacks on October 7, 2023.
06:08 The Palestinian Prisoners' Club and the ex-Prisoners' Commission denounced
06:13 the systematic campaign of arrests in the territory
06:16 and condemned the increased raids and destruction of the Palestinian homes.
06:20 Both groups noted that during that period,
06:22 the Israeli forces ordered more than 2,850 administrative detentions,
06:28 a procedure used to arrest Palestinians for renewal intervals,
06:32 usually ranging from three to six months,
06:35 on the basis of undisclosed evidence, which even the defendant lawyers are forbidden to see.
06:40 According to official data, during the last five months,
06:43 6,950 Palestinian citizens have been imprisoned.
06:49 The State of Palestine called on the parties concerned
06:57 to prevent the imminent bloodshed in Rafa,
07:00 where thousands of citizens have been displaced in the last 24 hours.
07:04 The Foreign Ministry urged all countries to intervene
07:07 and make Israel uphold its obligations under the Geneva Convention
07:11 and in line with the International Court of Justice's preventive measures orders,
07:15 including by immediately imposing sanctions and an arms embargo.
07:19 Finally, they pointed out that the world leaders have a historic responsibility
07:24 to prevent Israel from launching a grand assault on Rafa
07:27 and the foreseeable apocalyptic consequences.
07:33 The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan,
07:37 on Monday voiced deep concern about a possible Israeli ground offensive into Rafa in Gaza,
07:43 warning that anyone breaching international law could be held accountable.
07:47 Karim Khan said in a statement published on X, formerly Twitter,
07:52 that his office's investigation into events in Gaza is being taken forward
07:57 as a matter of utmost urgency.
08:00 The ICC opened a probe on 2021 into Israel's, as well as Hamas'
08:05 and other armed Palestinian groups for possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories.
08:10 Khan has previously said this investigation now extends to the escalation of hostilities
08:15 and violence since the attacks that took place on October 7, 2023.
08:21 The laws of war must be respected.
08:26 They can't be rendered hollow.
08:28 They can't be interpreted so as to void them of meaning
08:32 or to dilute or eviscerate any protective purpose that the Geneva Conventions
08:40 and the law provides the most vulnerable children, women, people that are sick, or civilians.
08:46 They must be interpreted with full protection.
08:49 The risks to civilians is profound and I'm concerned.
08:52 And I have to underline the fact that there's no blank check.
08:56 There is an active investigation and all people, all parties are on notice.
09:01 The Israeli government is on notice, officials, members of the military are on notice
09:05 that we are investigating.
09:07 If there are crimes, we'll get to the bottom of it.

09:55 Welcome back to From the South.
09:57 The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
10:00 reported on Tuesday that criminal groups in Haiti are increasing their activity.
10:05 As a result, hundreds of citizens have become displaced by this war
10:09 between criminal groups and the government.
10:11 Although these criminal groups have lost up to 300 of its members,
10:15 in the month of January alone, violence does not decrease.
10:19 Citizens claim that the exchanges of fire last for hours,
10:23 which suggests that they have received more ammunition.
10:26 In the midst of war, civilians are injured, abducted, murdered,
10:30 and women and girls continue to be sexually abused.
10:33 The serious situation is expected to be reviewed on Tuesday at the UN Security Council.
10:43 On Monday in Cuba started the second international meeting
10:48 of theoretical publications of left-wing parties and movements.
10:52 The event is taking place at the Convention Palace in the capital city of Havana
10:56 and will last until Wednesday, February 14th.
10:59 The forum brings together intellectuals, parties, movements, and popular forces
11:04 from Cuba and 32 other countries to discuss the importance of unity
11:08 and the position of youth in the face of fascism and neo-fascism.
11:13 The meeting is considered important for progressive and leftist forces
11:17 given the worsening of the international crisis,
11:19 the rise of governments after the extreme right-wing ideology,
11:22 and the delay in the emergence of a new multipolar world order.
11:31 On Sunday, a survey revealed that 86% of US citizens consider
11:35 that President Joe Biden is too old to serve a second term.
11:39 A survey by ABC News and the consulting company Ipsos
11:42 again revealed that US citizens' concerns about Joe Biden's age.
11:47 The survey shows that 73% of the Democrats think Biden, at 81,
11:52 is too old to hold the office, while 35% of Republicans believe the same about Trump.
11:58 The survey comes to light days after special attorney Robert Hughes' report
12:03 was made public which cast questions on Biden's cognitive abilities,
12:07 which he referred to Biden as "understanding, well-intentioned elder with a bad memory."
12:17 On Sunday, in El Salvador, opposition parties announced that they withdrew
12:21 from the final vote counting of February 4th legislative elections
12:25 after reporting irregularities promoted by the ruling party.
12:29 In this way, the president of the Arena Party, Carlos García Sádez,
12:33 reiterated that the measure is due to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal
12:37 not providing the conditions for a transparent process.
12:40 In this sense, he stated that they were witnesses of the manipulation
12:44 of the counting system and criticized the entry of vigilance without credentials
12:49 from Nayib Bukele's party, despite being prohibited.
12:52 In this sense, also representatives of the Vamos Party, Nuestro Tiempo and Arena,
12:58 stated that they consider requesting the nulity of the elections of deputies
13:02 to the legislative assembly due to the anomalies in the electoral process.
13:07 If up to four substitute magistrates have already decided to say that they are departing
13:18 from this process, it is because even they know about the fraud that has happened here.
13:23 They know about the crazy things that those magistrates, the owners, have done.
13:27 And well, we as parties are not going to endorse, we are not going to continue endorsing this.
13:33 Unfortunately, we trust the court.
13:35 But here we are, here we are in this big problem.
13:38 The High Commissioner for Peace in Colombia, Oti Patiño,
13:42 described the armed stoppage decreed by the National Liberation Army, the ELN,
13:46 as disloyal to the agreements.
13:48 Patiño thus assured on Monday that he gave statements from the Palace of Nariño,
13:53 headquarters of the national government.
13:55 In reference to the stoppage and other acts of violence that have occurred
13:59 in the departments of Cauca and Nariño,
14:02 the High Commissioner assured that they threaten the lives and freedoms of thousands of citizens.
14:07 The Western War Front of Mar Gómez of the ELN declared an armed strike on February 8th,
14:13 after accepting the extension of a truce on February 6th,
14:17 during the sixth round of negotiations held in Cuba.
14:21 The armed stoppage often restricts the movement of vehicles and roads
14:25 and the mobility of people, threatening attacks on those who transit the tracks,
14:29 even if they are in caravans escorted by the army.
14:33 In Argentina, community kitchens continue to demand the delivery of food.
14:41 The Union of Workers of the Popular Economy filed on Monday an injunction
14:46 for the Ministry of Human Capital to deliver food to community dining rooms.
14:50 In this sense, the document states that there is a budget to provide assistance,
14:55 but the state inaction generates that many people cannot have access to a daily meal.
15:00 Furthermore, the text points out that the main right affected is food
15:05 for those who attend the community kitchens and depend on them to survive.
15:09 In turn, they point out that since Javier Millet assumed the presidency,
15:13 the spaces have stopped receiving any type of input or transfer of funds.

16:01 Welcome back to From the South.
16:04 In Poland, farmers maintain a blockade on the border with Ukraine,
16:08 blocking the entry into the European Union of at least 1,000 trucks loaded with Ukrainian products.
16:14 The blockade is in response to the European Commission's decision to maintain the tariff privileges
16:19 enjoyed by agricultural products from Kiev.
16:22 The demonstrators assured that opening the control of the European bloc to the benefit of Kiev
16:28 was a mistake that causes problems to the agricultural system of the European Union.
16:33 According to Ukrainian authorities, the demonstrators have prevented the circulation of trucks in both directions
16:39 and only about 145 trucks managed to cross the border in the last 24 hours.
16:45 According to data, between 1,000 and 1,400 trucks loaded with foodstuffs from Ukraine
16:52 crossed the border with Poland daily before the protests.
16:59 Indian authorities deployed a harsh security mechanism against the march of thousands of farmers to New Delhi
17:05 who demand protection of prices of their crops.
17:08 The police have deployed barriers with sharp wires, spikes and concrete blocks
17:13 to prevent the passage of tractors and trucks.
17:16 They've also thrown tear gas from a drone in Haryana.
17:19 From this place and from Punjab, thousands of farmers started their protest march
17:25 to demand a guaranteed minimum support price for all their products
17:29 and for the government to fulfill their promise made in 2021, according to which they would double their income.

18:01 In El Callao, Venezuela, some 850 kilometers southeast of Caracas, the capital,
18:07 one of the most iconic carnivals of the country, which has been declared
18:11 Intangible Heritage of Humanity, comes to life.
18:14 We review its genesis and the history of mixed cultures that led to it in this report by Leonel Retamal.
18:21 We are en route to the southeast region of Venezuela, crossing hot areas in Miranda,
18:26 the oil wells in Anzuategui and going beyond the mighty Caroni River.
18:31 To the south, in the state of Bolívar, bordering Brazil in the valley of El Callao,
18:36 on the banks of the Uruguay River, is a land of gold, calyxo and soccer.
18:42 In 1876, the first soccer match ever held in Venezuela took place here.
18:48 As we arrive, we are greeted by the giant statues of the Black Madams Isidora and Lulú Basanta,
18:54 historical defenders of this land and its carnival.
18:57 To learn more, we meet with Cultura Emilia Murati and with town's historian,
19:03 Fraima Orsini, heirs of a family tradition rooted in the town's origins.
19:09 We got migrants from the Antilles who arrived by the Merara, by the Cuyuní River,
19:19 by the part of the Azuquibor, because they too were colonists, one French and one English.
19:25 Once these colonists disintegrated, the gold rush began in El Callao,
19:30 originally in Nueva Providencia, today's Caratal.
19:34 Reverend Madame from the Anglican Church of El Callao,
19:45 descendant of the town's founders, describes a similar path.
19:49 They came to Trinidad due to the proximity of Trinidad and Venezuela.
20:00 Many settled in Sucre, but many continued down to El Callao and settled in Gallana,
20:06 in Georgetown, to get to the Cuyuní River and then to the Uruguay River, which connects with El Callao.
20:14 It is said that the town's name derives from the fact that the miners who discovered a vein of gold
20:20 told no one about it, but there is another version about a Peruvian migrant
20:25 who named it in honor of the port of Lima.
20:28 In any case, the truth is that the town's history and present are marked by gold mining and migration.
20:35 We come from the closure and mixture of French and English immigrants,
20:40 and we come from a closure and mixture of races that make this town a special town.
20:46 All these people, instead of going back to where they came from, brought people from the Antilles,
21:02 from Martinique, Santa Lucia, San Martín, Renede, etc.
21:08 Instead of returning home, they brought along their employees, because by then there was no slavery.
21:14 They were employees who came of their own free will.
21:19 Instead of returning to France or to England,
21:24 they brought people from the Antilles, from the Antilles,
21:29 and they brought them to the Antilles,
21:34 and they were called by the birth of the birth of the Antilles.
21:40 They joined the rush gold here.
21:43 They brought investment and machinery and settled in Nueva Providencia,
21:48 and that led to the foundation of the town of Folcallao.
21:52 Although there are records on music and popular festivities dating back 150 years,
22:02 and relating protest drums, it is in the early 1950s that the carnival took shape
22:08 in its current format of comparsas and groups with traditional characters and music.
22:14 We do not have an exact date for the start of the carnival.
22:22 Our ancestors, the people from the Antilles, brought their traditional music.
22:30 They gathered to sing, not just calypso.
22:35 In 1880, the first drum beats were heard in Nueva Providencia.
22:41 It was a traditional African drum.
22:46 El callao, which vibrates to the rhythm of the contagious calypso,
22:51 was the first drum beat in the town of Folcallao.
22:56 El callao, which vibrates to the rhythm of the contagious calypso,
23:01 struggles to maintain its cultures and traditions,
23:04 a very peculiar syncretism even within Venezuela.
23:08 And like this we have come to the end of this news brief.
