00:00 The 1st of January 2025 is the date to pencil into your calendar for when these new standards
00:07 will come into place. That's if all goes well at Federal Parliament this year with legislation
00:12 set to be introduced in the coming months. Now under these new standards, car companies
00:16 will be required to sell more fuel efficient vehicles and industry bodies are hoping that
00:21 this will mean more of an uptake of electric vehicles here in Australia too. Now these
00:26 standards will be determined by average emissions per kilometre for new cars being sold in the
00:32 country and only affects passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. Now Australia
00:37 has been dubbed a bit of a dumping ground for fuel inefficient vehicles because unlike
00:41 other countries like China, the US, New Zealand and parts of Europe too, we haven't had standards
00:46 in place for our fuel efficiency. Now Energy Minister Chris Bowen spoke a short time ago
00:52 about these standards. He's saying that Australians are paying more at the petrol bowser than
00:56 people in other countries because of our reliance on petrol and diesel. He says these standards
01:01 are a long time coming. A reform that is long overdue. It should have been done a decade
01:08 or so ago and was done in other countries many, many years ago including the United
01:13 States 50 years ago or so. This is a reform at its heart about choice. Jess, what are
01:21 users saying about the changes? Well Gemma, as you know we're in a cost of living crisis
01:28 so any amount of savings that Australians can make particularly at the petrol bowser
01:32 is welcome news. Modelling shows that by 2028 Aussie drivers could be saving up to $1000
01:39 per car per year on petrol. Now the climate change industry has also met this announcement
01:46 and said that it is also welcome news. The Farmers for Climate Action Group have said
01:51 that this is also a long time coming and they welcome these new standards. Take a listen.
01:57 This will save regional Australians money but also really importantly stop Australia
02:02 being a dumping ground for low quality vehicles in the future. No current car that's on the
02:09 road is impacted but what we're excited about is finally Australia and Russia are no longer
02:17 the dumping grounds, it's just Russia. Now Independent Senator David Pocock says he wants
02:23 to see these standards brought in even sooner. He wants to see them come into place in July
02:28 this year for a six month penalty free trial period. But Gemma, it's looking like for now
02:33 car manufacturers have until the 1st of January next year before they need to start selling
02:38 more fuel efficient vehicles.
