A child was killed in a five-car accident believed to have been caused by potholes in
00:07
Kinabatangan district.
00:09
It is believed that the accident occurred after one of the drivers tried to avoid potholes
00:14
along the Sandakan-Lahat Datu Road near Kampung Paris 1 on Saturday morning.
00:19
Kinabatangan OCPD Superintendent Zulbaharin Ismail said initial investigations revealed
00:25
that two lorries had collided when the drivers tried to avoid potholes and uneven roads.
00:31
In a statement, he said two other vehicles, a sedan and a three-ton lorry, had to brake
00:36
to avoid crashing into the lorries.
00:38
However, an express bus coming from the same direction failed to stop and rammed into the
00:43
back of the sedan.
00:45
The impact caused the sedan to slide forward, crashing into the three-ton lorry.
00:50
The sedan driver sustained minor injuries, but a girl in the sedan was later pronounced
00:55
dead.
00:56
Superintendent Zulbaharin added that all 29 passengers and the driver on the express bus
01:02
escaped unhurt.
01:04
Following the accident, the bus driver was detained to facilitate investigations for
01:08
reckless driving, and a remand application would be made soon.
01:12
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations Hamza Isnerdini said
01:18
they were alerted to an accident involving five vehicles at 11.19 a.m.
01:23
Upon arrival, the team learned that six people were injured, including two adults and four
01:29
children, and had been taken to the hospital.
01:32
Kinabatangan Fire Station Chief Nurul Azlan Shah Jamaluddin later confirmed that the youngest
01:38
member of the group died while undergoing emergency treatment at the Lahat Datu Hospital.
