Bexhill and Battle MP, Huw Merriman, hosted a public meeting at St Augustine's Church, Bexhill on January 26, 2024 to discuss Northeye.

00:00 So I've organised this meeting to discuss the proposed asylum centre at North Eye.

00:09 It's still a proposed only, the Home Office have not yet finished all of their surveying work,

00:14 so we still don't know if it's going to go ahead.

00:16 If it does go ahead, we've been told it will be a detained closed centre

00:20 where people will not be able to come and go from the centre,

00:23 and that was one of the key concerns when this was first mooted back in March.

00:28 So I've worked very hard to try and get that part solved,

00:32 but of course those that are adjacent to the centre would still have impacts,

00:36 and I'm determined to work for them.

00:38 So this public meeting, I believe in old-fashioned politics,

00:41 it's good to be able to discuss with the public, they can ask me questions,

00:45 I'll give them the information I can give them,

00:47 but we're still waiting for a final answer as to whether this will even go ahead.
