00:00 The federal court was told today that the unilateral conversion of a woman, carried

00:06 out when she was a child at the insistence of her mother, was unlawful at the time it

00:12 Lawyer Mali Imtiaz Sarwar said his client's purported conversion in May 1991 was prohibited

00:18 by an enactment that barred the conversion of children to Islam.

00:23 He said a subsequent amendment and bylaw were passed in September that year, stipulating

00:27 that the conversion of children could only be done with the consent of both parents.

00:32 Malik claimed that consent was never sought from the woman's father, even though the

00:36 Salangor Islamic Religious Department was aware that she had a father at the time.

00:41 Born in 1986, the woman was originally Hindu before she was converted to Islam by her mother

00:46 in 1991.

00:48 She said the conversion took place at Jais' office while her parents were in the midst

00:52 of a divorce, which was finalized a year later.
