00:00Perlis Mufti Asri Zainul Abedin says it is not un-Islamic for Muslims to oppose public

00:07caning for those convicted of kawwat.

00:11Asri said this is because there is no specific rule in Sharia law requiring kawwat offenders

00:17to be publicly caned.

00:20He said public caning for such offences may contradict the intent of Sharia law which

00:25encourages concealing personal shame.

00:29In a statement today, Asri said public caning is not the law of Allah and His Messenger

00:34but rather a choice of the ruler.

00:38Afandi Awang became the first person in Cenganu to be caned in public yesterday.

00:45Cenganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the caning served as a form of education,

00:52deterrence and guidance to encourage society to align with Islamic values.

00:58Earlier today, past spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said all states should follow Cenganu's

01:04example of public caning to uphold and honour Islamic law.
