We asked the people of London if they feel safe in the city they live in.

00:04 And there's been quite a few other murders recently as well.

00:07 Yeah.

00:07 How safe do you feel, remember?

00:09 I personally feel perfectly safe, but then I'm probably most quite likely to feel safe.

00:17 You know, I'm a man.

00:19 Women are obviously subject to far less safety than men are, I think, typically.

00:27 I think it's tough for young folks, you know, by that situation.

00:30 It's really grim.

00:32 But personally speaking, I feel safe.

00:34 Touch wood.

00:35 I do feel safe in London.

00:36 When I was a kid in Australia, I did not feel safe going out in the evening as a young woman.

00:44 I don't know.

00:45 I just feel like because it's a crowded city, I do feel usually pretty secure.

00:51 But then I have an 18-year-old daughter, and now when she's going out clubbing and all

00:56 sorts of things all the time, I can't sleep until she's home.

00:59 I think that it's worrying the level of violence.

01:03 But if I'm honest, on a personal level, I don't feel it particularly too badly.

01:09 I'm born here.

01:13 Probably second generation Caribbean.

01:17 So I've found it a challenge on and off, demographically and socially.

01:27 It's OK if you know where you're going.

01:32 You know the areas.

01:33 You know the people.

01:34 You have a mentality that each area can sort of possess, I guess, in that way.

01:42 If you're young, you've got to watch yourself.

01:47 I think for the young, and for a long time, for maybe three, four decades, a lot of things

01:53 have changed.

01:54 Now youth clubs, blah, blah.

01:55 Talk about how safe London feels at the moment.

01:56 Do you feel safe in London?

01:57 Well, out of 10, seven.

01:58 Six or seven.

01:59 What do you think could be done to make you feel safer?

02:00 Well, the obvious answer is more visible policing.

02:01 And there's an awful lot of negative publicity about the police.

02:02 And I think that's a big problem.

02:21 agree with, but without any real evidence of it, I suppose.

02:24 But you don't see police on the streets like you used to.

02:27 You see them in cars occasionally.

02:29 But you used to see police walking around.

02:31 Though I felt more secure when it was like that.

02:33 Sometimes it feels a bit dodgy walking around in the dark.

02:37 Or if you're a young guy.

02:38 I mean, I'm 60 now.

02:40 But I think if you're young and you're out and you're partying and you're going to clubs

02:44 or areas where people are having a few drinks or smoking some stuff, then I think it'd probably

02:49 get a bit leery.

02:50 And maybe we wouldn't put it that high.

02:55 You get into scrapes when you're younger, when you're a teenager in your 20s.

02:58 You don't get into scrapes at my age.
