NEWS: Success means bringing everyone along for the journey

UOB Malaysia, the main partner for The Edge ESG Awards 2023, recognises that for ESG compliance to be a success, everybody needs to be along for the journey.

00:22 Based on our observations, more corporates are committing to achieving net zero.

00:28 In fact, some of Malaysia's public-listed companies are actually quite advanced in their sustainability journey,

00:35 placing greater emphasis on their scope 3 emissions, including greening their value chain.

00:42 This is a heartening trend.

00:45 With their progress, we hope PLCs can lead by example as their experiences, innovation and collaborations

00:55 can become good industry case studies for other companies.

01:00 PLCs should also use their knowledge and experience to actively support SMEs,

01:07 particularly those in their value chain, to transition along.

01:11 They can work with ESG experts and financial institutions to help raise awareness

01:18 and provide financing to these smaller enterprises.

01:22 For Malaysia to achieve its net zero ambitions, it is important that our SMEs embrace sustainability.

01:45 We have a clear sustainability strategy.

01:48 Internally, we have achieved carbon neutrality for our own emissions since 2021.

01:54 Our new head office, UOB Plaza 1 KL, is a green, energy-efficient building

02:00 that has been designed to improve our staff's wellness.

02:04 It is also year-marked for platinum certification by Green RE and for BCA Greenmark.

02:11 As a group, UOB has made our commitment to achieve net zero by 2050

02:17 and we are now focusing our efforts to reduce our Scope 3 finance emissions,

02:24 with emphasis on six key sectors that make up 60% of our corporate lending portfolio.

02:31 Our first net zero progress report has just been published

02:35 and it shows that we are making steady progress towards achieving our commitment.

02:40 In 2022, as a group, we have achieved 7 to 14% below target reference pathways

02:49 across our emissions intensity metrics within our six focus sectors.
