The figure for the number of people who have died or gone missing while crossing the Mediterranean is at its highest rate since 2018, according to the International Organization for Migration.

00:00 More than 2,400 people have died or disappeared while trying to cross the Mediterranean since
00:06 the start of the year. A harrowing figure that has already surpassed the number of people
00:10 who died or went missing during all of 2022. That is according to the International Organization
00:15 for Migration, which tracks the number of fatalities on migration routes around the
00:19 world. The UN agency also reports that 2023 is the deadliest year for migration on Mediterranean
00:26 routes since 2018. The Central Mediterranean is the deadliest known migration route in
00:30 the world and where the most disappearances have occurred. These figures come as more
00:35 than 1,000 people have died in the Americas this year. Over the past two decades, the
00:42 border crossing between Mexico and the United States has become the site of a grave humanitarian
00:46 crisis. Many of the victims on the border have drowned in the Rio Grande and surrounding
00:53 canals. Other deaths were due to the harsh environment and lack of shelter, food and
00:59 water.
