European Film Awards 2026: 'Sentimental Value' sweeps the board

Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value' has pulled off a clean sweep, winning a total of six awards, including Best European Film, Best Director and both acting awards. Elsewhere, Oliver Laxe's Sirat picked up five awards during a politically charged evening in Berlin.

00:01Sentimental Value, a drama about an aging filmmaker and his estranged actor daughter
00:07was the talk of the night at this year's European Film Awards.
00:14It was closely followed by Surat, an existential road trip which tells the story of a father
00:20willing to venture into the Moroccan desert to find his daughter.
00:24The award for Best European Documentary went to Igor Besinovich's Film O Morte,
00:34in which the Croatian filmmaker asked his local town to re-enact their 16-month occupation
00:40at the hands of the dandy proto-fascist Gabriel Danuzio in 1919.
00:49Joakim Trio's sentimental value has swept the board here in Berlin
00:52for the European Film Awards, winning the coveted Best European Film
00:56and several other prizes, including Acting Awards, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
01:02The film now cements itself as Europe's frontrunner for the Oscars come March.
01:08Elsewhere, Olivia Lacha's Sirat has won several awards
01:11and the main surprise of the evening is Jafar Panahi's Palma d'Or winner

01:18The Iranian filmmaker did take to the stage to open the ceremony tonight in Berlin,
01:24delivering a politically charged speech in which he denounces the atrocities committed in Iran.
