Conservative MP and veteran of the war in Afghanistan, Ben Obese-Jecty says he was "saddened" to see "offensive" comments by US President Donald Trump that NATO troops 'stayed a little off the frontlines' during the conflict. Obese-Jecty served as a captain in Helmand Province, Afganistan from 2009 to 2010. Report by Keechl. 00:00I'm really, really saddened to see the interview from President Trump last night that suggested that the NATO forces didn't make suitable sacrifices in Afghanistan and that they weren't deployed forward and didn't see any combat.
00:15I myself am a veteran of Afghanistan and I served with the Three Rifles Battle Group in Sangin.
00:22Sangin is a place where we took nearly a third of all British Army casualties in Afghanistan.
00:26Indeed, we handed over to the U.S. Marines ultimately, who took a similar rate of casualties there.
00:33To suggest that the British forces and indeed those of our NATO partners weren't putting in a shift in Afghanistan is a deeply offensive thing to suggest.
00:43And it goes, it follows on from comments from the Vice President before, who previously last year made similar comments around a lack of efforts from NATO partners.
00:54So I am very, very saddened to see the U.S. administration taking this stance with us as one of their closest allies.
