Glasgow musician Bemz on being shortlisted for the 2023 SAY award, becoming a father and how it’s influenced his work

Bemz made the shortlist of the 2023 Scottish Album of the Year award for his latest release Nova’s Dad.

00:06 'cause my album, "Novus Dadus"

00:07 we're nominated for the shortlist

00:09 of the Scottish Album of the Year Award.

00:11 It's basically about a boy who became a man

00:14 because he had a child, you know?

00:15 And it was just like all the feelings that I felt

00:19 and everything that I felt during the period

00:21 of finding out I was gonna be a dad

00:23 to becoming a dad, you know?

00:24 And that's what the album embodies, you know?

00:27 It goes through all the feelings from sadness

00:29 to anxiety to the depression to happiness

00:33 to being grateful and just everything, you know?

00:35 So yeah, I hope that's a good pitch.

00:38 - No, but that's like, so see,

00:39 like from your like older stuff then

00:41 and like your previous work,

00:42 tell us about maybe about how you've like

00:46 developed it from then.

00:48 And obviously you've went through this like really like

00:50 huge transition in your life through this album.

00:54 So tell us how you got from like here to here.

00:56 - Um.

00:57 Doing things that you should not be doing basically.

01:02 Do you know what I mean?

01:03 No, I'm joking.

01:04 You know, it's,

01:06 if one thing, life will always humble you, innit?

01:09 Do you know what I mean?

01:10 And if one thing I always learn from is life, you know?

01:13 And that's kind of really it.

01:15 From, you know, "Saint of Lost Causes" to M4

01:18 to now and over is that.

01:20 It's just been growth and just how we can better ourselves,

01:25 you know, and I'm fortunate enough to have such a

01:29 big thing happen to me, you know, which is like my daughter,

01:32 you know, and that was really the catalyst for change.

01:36 And, you know, and I think because the project

01:39 was so personal as well,

01:40 like I really had to do it justice.

01:42 You know, I really had to take my time

01:44 when we were crafting it and it had to be

01:45 with the right people and people who understood

01:48 exactly what this project meant to me.

01:49 Do you know what I mean?

01:50 So, and once you start doing that, you know,

01:55 everything just elevates, you know,

01:56 because you're now working with people who care about you,

02:00 you know, and because they care about you,

02:02 they care about the project, you know,

02:04 because they care about the project,

02:05 it means everyone's 100% love, time and everything

02:08 went into it and you can hear it, you know,

02:10 and you can, like, when people listen to it,

02:12 I hope they hear how we all felt in the process

02:15 of making it 'cause it was very, very emotional, you know?
