Check out Kim Reynolds driving the new 2016 Chevrolet Volt for the first time on Pacific Coast Highway in this Motor Trend video!
Transcript
00:00 As you might be able to tell from the background over there, we're along the California coast
00:13 on highway 1, famous highway 1.
00:16 Experienced the new Volt a bit on these corners and it's a good idea because this car does
00:22 handle quite well.
00:24 Normally you don't think of a Volt and handling as words that necessarily go together, but
00:29 this car I actually like its agility.
00:30 It feels lighter.
00:31 It is a lighter car.
00:33 The drive train is about 100 pounds lighter than before.
00:37 Talk about the design a little bit.
00:39 We were just doing a photo shoot on the side of the road and all of us were commenting
00:44 that it kind of strikes you.
00:45 It has a Honda quality to it, a little bit of a Honda Civic.
00:48 The interior is rather flamboyant as a lot of GM interior designs are.
00:53 To my taste, it's a little much.
00:56 It is attractive.
00:57 I think most people will find it very striking and very attractive.
01:00 I just have more conservative tastes about interiors.
01:03 Displays like this that are cropping up on various cars where they're just sort of stuck
01:09 on.
01:10 This one is sort of a compromise where it's a little bit stuck on, but it does integrate
01:14 and blend into the rest of the design rather thoughtfully.
01:18 The car through these corners, not only does it I think steer rather nicely, but also the
01:24 sense of EV electric motor surging power and torque are really very, very pleasant through
01:31 there.
01:32 It's just like a little wave of push.
01:35 So the battery is bigger.
01:37 It's more powerful.
01:38 It's an 18 kilowatt hour battery.
01:40 It was 16 before as I recall.
01:42 The range of the car should be around over 50 miles.
01:47 EV 53 is the official claim.
01:50 It's a wildly complex transmission.
01:54 It's four dimensional chess.
01:57 It works though and it's working right now and very seamlessly.
02:01 The whole time I'm talking, we ran through the battery.
02:04 The engine started.
02:05 It's not running now.
02:06 Did you notice it?
02:07 Did I notice it?
02:08 I only noticed it now that I'm talking to you and I look down and I realize the engine's
02:12 running.
02:13 I'm quite impressed by the car.
02:14 It drives very nicely.
02:16 It doesn't have any of the defects the first car had.
02:20 Everything about this car is substantially better.
02:22 So it's a heck of a deal, a heck of a bargain, a heck of a lot of technology for the money.
02:29 Nonetheless it's going to be a very interesting cat fight between all these new wild technologies
02:35 to see which one wins.
02:36 [music]
