Maybe it is a bit early to start talking about Christmas traditions but pantomimes will be popping up across the region very soon. We visited the Whitley Bay Playhouse as they launch this years show Cinderella which features some panto favourites and Louie Spence as the Fairy Godfather.

00:00 Yes, this year I'm playing the fairy godfather. It's the first time I've done this, I've never
00:06 done this before so it's something new to me but it should be fun. You know, I don't
00:10 really get nervous, it's more excited, you know, so, and panto's always fun, it's never,
00:15 you know, something, it's not like, I mean it is serious, but it's fun, it's for the
00:19 family, you know, you can interact with the audience a bit so it's a little bit looser
00:24 than when you do a West End show and everything has to be 100% to script. So, yeah, I think
00:29 I just always look forward to, you know, having fun at Christmas.
00:33 And that is exactly what Pantomimes are all about, having fun. This year the Whitley Bay
00:38 Playhouse's panto is Cinderella and it will be running from the 8th of December until
00:43 the 6th of January. It features some panto favourites including Steve Walz who has starred
00:48 in the pantomime here for a long time.
00:51 Buttons is kind of lovable to the kids, well he is lovable, hopefully. I'm basically the
00:57 guy who looks out for Cinderella, likes her and tries to make sure she's taken care of,
01:01 not the ugly sisters doing ghetto or too much, tries to cheer her up when she's feeling a
01:05 little bit down and make the audience laugh hopefully. I love it, every single one, I
01:09 never take it for granted, this is my 27th panto, my 14th one here and it's just lovely.
01:14 Every time I walk out and I, "Hiya gang!" and they all shout back "Hiya Buttons, Hiya
01:18 Muddles" or whatever, wishy-washy, it's just lovely, just a lovely feeling.
01:22 The show also includes Simmons and Simmons as the Prince's footmen, Daniel Morstan and
01:27 Luke Martin will be playing the ugly stepsisters, Jacob Roseford as Prince Charming and Jessica
01:32 Lily as Cinderella herself.
01:34 This classic fairy tale is always a favourite with many people and it can be a tradition
01:39 for families to come and see a panto every year. Steve said that after performing at
01:44 the Playhouse he has seen so many people come back year after year.
01:48 Oh hugely, and they go on the same day as well, so I'll come out on a Christmas Eve,
01:52 we have three shows and the same people will be at the 11 o'clock that were there last
01:54 year, the year before, and I do pictures in the end in the foyer and I've had kids being
01:59 that big and they've got older, year on year and I always have a picture and they don't
02:03 look any older but I do, something wrong there innit?
02:05 It's the first time a lot of kids come to the theatre, you know their grandparents bring
02:08 them or their parents bring them and then that's what the tradition starts and the same
02:13 way their grandparents bring them then the mums and dads now bring their kids so it is,
02:17 there is a big family tradition in it and like I say where it's something for the whole
02:20 family, you know the script is sort of aimed towards the parents so they can have a laugh
02:26 but also all the sparkle and the dancing and the glitz and the fun for the kids so it's
02:30 something for everyone, it's just like a really fun day out so I think where it's
02:34 marked is more towards family over Christmas, it's reasonably priced and it's a good
02:37 fun day out and gets the kids ready for Christmas.
02:41 So the whole cast of Cinderella will be bringing some magic to the North East over the festive
02:45 period this year.
02:47 But of course we couldn't go without asking for Louis and Steve's favourite panto line.
02:53 Well I do the ghost guard bench every year so we always sing Ghostbusters which is fabulous
02:57 and the kids absolutely love it, it's brilliant, brilliant.
03:00 Oh he's behind you!
