00:00 Hi everyone, I'm Nick Millington. I'm the route director for Network Rail in the Wales and Borders route.
00:04 And I'm Clare Pillman. I'm chief executive of Natural Resources Wales
00:09 and Nick and I have met up here today in Barmouth for a very special reason.
00:14 Earlier today a very important partnership was solidified as our two organisations renewed our
00:20 commitment to a shared vision to create a better, eco-friendly, sustainable and more resilient
00:26 railway and environment, as we put pen to paper on our new Memorandum of Understanding.
00:32 Our organisations help each other in a number of ways, for example on coastal and river schemes
00:40 to reduce flood risk, to protect wildlife habitats and to create efficiencies in the
00:46 planning of major projects. Like here, where we have worked together to ensure that the delicate
00:52 ecology of the Malvach estuary is kept safe during the multi-million pound refurbishment
00:58 of the Barmouth fire duct. Another example where this partnership has been extremely effective
01:04 and crucially time-saving was the extensive remedial work following the derailment of a
01:09 freight train at Llangenech in Carmarthenshire in August 2020. More than 30,000 tonnes of fuel
01:18 soaked soil was excavated from beneath 150 metres of our railway lines, preventing lasting
01:24 environmental impact and protecting the local landscape. By combining our knowledge, expertise
01:31 and resource, we're able to work in a more cost-effective, time-efficient and safe way.
01:37 We're so pleased to have renewed our partnership, ensuring a greener future for our environment.
