Fuad Abu Bakr says his party, the NNV, continues to function even as it has formed what he calls an amalgamation with the party led by Watson Duke for upcoming Local Government Elections.

Mr. Bakr and seven other members of his party are contesting electoral districts in Port of Spain under the PDP symbol.

Our Political Editor Juhel Browne reports.

00:00 Speaking on the I-95.5 FM morning show on Thursday, Fuad Abubakar sought to clarify
00:05 the present status of his political party, the New National Vision, as he is contesting
00:10 the Belmont North and West Electoral District in the local government elections on August
00:15 14th as a candidate for the Progressive Democratic Patriots.
00:20 We continue, we continue.
00:22 The support that I have with the NNV has been integral in working in this district and a
00:29 couple other districts as well to propel our candidates forward under this banner of PDP.
00:38 So what exactly is the agreement?
00:40 So we are contesting eight districts in total as amalgamation underneath the PDP bamboo or
00:50 whatever symbol you want to call it.
00:53 And we feel very strongly that this is an opportune moment to free ourselves of the
01:01 weight of the PNM in Port of Spain.
01:04 Mr. Bakker, the son of the later leader of the Jamaat al-Muslimiyah, Yasin Abubakar,
01:08 explained.
01:09 I would have sat down and spoke to Mr. Watson Duke for some time about what my vision for
01:18 Trinidad and Tobago is, the progressive place that I want it to be, even politically.
01:26 And he would have corresponded with his ideology of people before politics, of bringing real
01:33 representation to Trinidad and Tobago.
01:37 And it is in that understanding and policy that we have decided to work together.
