00:03 - Pat, as we now try to get used to the fact
00:06 that football is back in our lives,
00:08 I am trying to make heads or tails
00:11 of what is going on with this Iowa State quarterback,
00:15 Hunter Deckers, who we told you guys earlier
00:18 is now under investigation about making bets
00:23 on his own team, as well as other sports
00:26 on a DraftKings account that apparently,
00:30 looks like it's very easy to trace back to him,
00:34 although it appears that he's gonna take the stance
00:38 that, not my bets, man.
00:39 I mean, I know I have the account, but it's not my bets.
00:43 What is going on with this thing, Pat?
00:45 - Yeah, we'll get to the traceability aspect in a second.
00:50 But yeah, so Hunter Deckers, who was projected
00:53 to be the Iowa State starting quarterback this season,
00:56 is now facing charges for betting,
00:59 which a lot of them came when he was under age,
01:03 which is, you know, in itself a crazy thing.
01:06 But it comes from a bigger investigation of,
01:09 I think it's 41 or some athletes
01:12 from University of Iowa and Iowa State.
01:15 And he's just the latest name to come out of this.
01:17 And yeah, as a starting quarterback at a major university,
01:20 that's kind of a big deal.
01:21 Now, to your point, it is apparently part of an alleged
01:25 scheme that he was in with his parents on DraftKings.
01:29 But I think they bet over 300 bets,
01:32 not a ton of money when it comes right down to it,
01:35 when you break it down from those 300 bets.
01:38 But yeah, it's just a really interesting situation
01:43 when you get right down to it based on, you know,
01:45 what are these kids doing that are betting on sports?
01:48 It's kind of the same thing as the NFL.
01:51 You know, the rules seem like
01:52 they're pretty straightforward.
01:54 You can't bet on, you know, your own team for sure.
01:57 You definitely can't bet on your school,
01:59 which he certainly was.
02:01 You definitely can't bet under age,
02:02 which he was for many of them.
02:05 And so that's, you know, it's not good.
02:07 He faces potential jail time if these allegations are true,
02:11 you know, and come out to be charged for that.
02:15 So I think it's up to two years or something like that.
02:18 It doesn't sound like he's taking part in fall camp
02:20 as he said he's gonna focus on studies
02:23 and the defense of this.
02:24 He pleaded not guilty.
02:26 So we'll see what happens there.
02:28 But to the traceability aspect, you know,
02:30 we hear a lot of people say, you know,
02:33 all sports betting is legal now and it's bad
02:36 because all these things are starting to happen.
02:38 But to your point about, oh, it's easy to trace the names.
02:41 I mean, without legal sports betting,
02:43 legal and regulated sports betting,
02:45 these names, whether it's the college kids,
02:47 the NFL players, whatever, would not be caught.
02:51 You know, you could argue potentially
02:53 that maybe they wouldn't be betting
02:54 if they didn't have legal sports books access,
02:58 but you know, there's bookies,
02:59 there's offshore sports books
03:01 that are certainly easy to access.
03:04 And so, yeah, the legal and regulated system
03:07 is clearly doing its job if these suspensions
03:11 and players are getting caught doing it.
03:13 And, you know, the more names that come out,
03:16 I think hopefully to your point,
03:18 we'll say, you know, hey, these players, you can't bet.
03:22 And, you know, the NFL rules are a little bit more lax
03:26 than the college rules, but you can't, you know,
03:29 you can't bet, basically.
