The Hood Healer reflects on her early start and how she continued to develop her skills.

00:00 It started off very rocky.
00:01 When my parents passed, there was no provisions,
00:05 is that the word I guess, for me.
00:08 And that was jarring because I,
00:13 I would say that they were a financially affluent
00:17 black family, but just no preparations for death.
00:22 So when my parents, and I'm adopted.
00:25 So when my parents passed, I was on my ass on the streets.
00:30 I couch surfed for a little bit.
00:33 I could not deal with the shame of my circumstances.
00:38 And I took myself to Skid Row, which is crazy.
00:44 Thinking back on it, but it was so pivotal and such,
00:53 it was so pivotal and exactly where I needed to be.
00:56 My early start was actually not a start at all.
01:01 I was really just trying to figure it out.
01:04 I was waitressing actually at Simply Wholesome
01:07 and playing with these cards, trying to get myself together.
01:11 And just the consistency of that attracted other people.
01:16 And I started pulling their cards
01:20 and I realized like, I might be kind of good at this.
01:23 And we just continued to develop.
01:26 But it really was haphazard.
01:28 It really was in pursuit of my own peace and stability
01:33 that brought me to this.
01:35 First, I want to preface and say, I'm not a tarot reader.
01:42 I'm not a card reader.
01:44 I do use cards, but that is not my medium.
01:47 Spirit communicates to me
01:49 and I communicate what spirit has communicated.
01:53 I feel like the astrology, the tarot, the crystals
01:59 are all extensions and expressions of the most high
02:05 that really bring out our magic.
02:08 And our magic has been suppressed.
02:12 And I feel like black folks have got,
02:14 I always say black folks,
02:16 we got to go watch "Birth of a Nation."
02:18 That is my homework to folks.
02:21 We have to watch "Birth of a Nation."
02:23 I think that we have to, as people of color,
02:26 recognize how religion, how Christianity
02:30 has been manipulated to suppress our magic.
02:34 So not saying that I don't identify with Christianity.
02:39 I'm not saying obviously that I don't believe in God,
02:41 but I do feel that we have been truly manipulated.
02:46 And through these modalities, I've gotten closer to spirit.
02:50 I've gotten closer to my spirit, my essence,
02:55 in the essence of God.
02:57 So I want us to be open-minded.
03:00 I want us as people of color to recognize
03:04 that we have a plethora of modalities that we can rely on,
03:10 that can support our journeys.
03:12 And I speak about God so much
03:15 because I know that there is apprehension
03:19 and I know that there's resistance.
03:21 But when we hear that sweet name, okay?
03:24 ♪ Something about the nation ♪
03:28 I know you didn't ask for all that.
03:30 (laughs)
03:32 Okay, but I feel like it disarms folks
03:36 and they're a little bit more receptive.
