Deputies passed the exam on Estonian language in Narva
The meeting of the Municipal Assembly of Narva was attended by the state language Commission (Supervisory authority in Estonia, which punishes for non-use of the state language). The Language Inspectorate received a complaint that deputies of city Council meetings speak in Russian and not Estonian. For such violation entails either a fine or dismissal. Narva is a city with a population of 60 thousand people. 98% of the population is Russian. All 31 deputy of the city Council — are Russians and in order to facilitate the discussions, the meetings are conducted in Russian. The language Commission was checking whether the information received is true and how well deputies speak Estonian.
