A just released study shows that the number of Mexicans living in poverty is on the rise, with a growing gap between rich and poor. Despite President Enrique Peña Nieto's election promise to reduce poverty, since he took office in 2012, the ranks of of the poor have grown by 2 million. Over 500 municipalities in the country's 3 poorest states have not received federal budget allocations. With budget cutbacks fueled by low oil prices, the panorama can be expected to worsen.
