On June 28, 2009, military officials kidnapped Honduran President Manuel Zelaya from his home, placing the elected leader on a U.S.-owned plane and sending him to neighboring Costa Rica. The event was a blow for Honduras' democracy and marked the steep descent into social violence in what is now the region's most dangerous country.
