The death toll from the massive mudslide early Monday morning in the northwestern state of Antioquia has now topped 60. The heavy rains and mud have hampered rescue efforts and the exact number of victims is still unknown. A state of emergency has been declared in the village of Salgar. Also in Antioquia, demining operations have begun with the participation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and specialists from other countries. In a major step forward for the peace process, the Colombian government, rebels, and the affected communities will work toger to rid the countryside of landmines. teleSUR
