Ecuador has once again broken its own record for successful reforestation efforts, which are part of meeting a larger national goal of protecting the environment. By planting over 600,000 trees throughout the country, Ecuador has broken the Guinness world record for reforestation. As many as 144,000 people participated in this historic endeavor. Ecuador became the first country in the world to guarantee the rights of the environment in its Constitution that was adopted in 2008, and to recognize the rights of citizens to live in an ecologically balanced and healthy environment. The government insists that protecting these rights is key to meeting the goals of the National Development Plan of Good Living. Liz Sherffius reports from Quito for teleSUR.
