The Panama Canal opened its doors to visitors on Sunday to unveil its ambitious expansion program. An estimated 45,000 tourists and local residents were in attendance. The expansion began in 2007 and when completed early next year, will double the canal's operating capacity from 300 million to 600 million tons per year. It will also enable the canal to accommodate ships three times as large as is presently the case. teleSUR
