Web Serial - Animation in Latin American Cinema

Today's edition of "Web Serial" looks at the way animation in shaping Latin American cinema. Our program begins in Mexico with the movie "True Heroes", about Mexican independence leaders Jose Maria Morelos and Miguel Hidalgo combined with fictional characters from the same period. Made for children, the movie helps instill pride and patriotism in its young viewers and wets their appetite for more knowledge on the country's history. Then it's off to Cuba to watch Menique, the country's first 3D animated production. The film is loosely based on a fairy tale by French author Édouard de Laboulaye, which was adapted by Cuban independence hero José Martí for his children’s magazine La Edad de Oro, and tells the story of a young peasant boy's quest for fortune. Meñique is a metaphor for wisdom and intelligence, and promotes values such as love, friendship, honor, and justice. The program ends in Argentina where public television has produced a new cartoon series for a new generation using the latest in high technology. Zamba reconstructs the history of Argentina, including parts that have been largely ignored, combining entertainment with education. The series has been a huge hit among Argentine children. teleSUR
