00:00Hey everyone, and welcome back.
00:02Today, we're diving into one of the most intense and dramatic stories you'll find anywhere.
00:07A tale of courage, supernatural showdowns, and unwavering faith in the face of impossible odds.
00:13We're talking about the prophet Elijah.
00:15Let's jump right into the heart of this ancient conflict.
00:18Picture this.
00:19The nation of Israel is in a deep spiritual crisis.
00:22The king Ahab and his queen, Jezebel, have led the people away from worshipping God
00:28and into the worship of a pagan deity named Baal.
00:31Now, Baal was considered the god of rain, fertility, and agriculture.
00:36Essentially, the people believed Baal was the one who controlled the weather and made their crops grow.
00:41This wasn't just a minor disagreement.
00:43It was a fundamental betrayal of their identity and their history.
00:47Into this dense atmosphere walks our hero, Elijah.
00:50He's a man from a rugged, remote area called Tishbe.
00:53He's not a polished court official or a smooth-talking politician.
00:57He is a wild man of the wilderness, and he has a message directly from God.
01:02Elijah marches straight into the royal court, looks King Ahab in the eye, and makes one of
01:07the boldest declarations in history.
01:09He says, as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives whom I serve.
01:14There will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years, except at my word.
01:18Let's pause and really think about how audacious this was.
01:21Elijah didn't just predict a dry spell.
01:23He was throwing down a direct challenge to the most powerful man in the land, and more
01:28importantly, to the God that Ahab and the entire nation were worshipping.
01:33He was essentially saying, you think Baal controls the rain?
01:37Let's see about that.
01:38The real God, the God of Israel, is about to turn of the tap, and only he can turn it
01:43back on.
01:44This wasn't just a weather forecast.
01:46It was a declaration of war.
01:48A spiritual showdown was about to begin, and the battlefield was the sky itself.
01:53Elijah's announcement set the stage for an epic conflict, forcing the people to confront
01:57a critical question.
01:59Who really holds the power?
02:00Baal or the God of Israel?
02:02So, Elijah has just dropped this banshel on King Ahab.
02:06No rain until I say so.
02:07You can imagine Ahab's reaction.
02:09Probably a mix of disbelief, anger, and maybe a little bit of fear.
02:13But this wasn't just about embarrassing the king.
02:16Elijah's drought prediction was a strategic move designed to expose the powerlessness
02:20of Baal and the grave consequences of Israel's idolatry.
02:24By turning to Baal, the God of rain, they had forsaken the one true God who actually provides
02:29it.
02:30The drought was a direct, tangible consequence of their spiritual choices.
02:34It was as if God was saying, you want to rely on a false god for your livelihood?
02:39Let's see how that works out for you.
02:41Now, after making this life-threatening announcement, Elijah needs to get out of town fast.
02:46King Ahab is not going to be happy.
02:48So God tells him, go east of the Jordan and hide in the Kerith ravine.
02:53And here's where the story takes a turn from a political drama to a lesson in radical trust.
02:59God tells Elijah, you will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply
03:03you with food there.
03:04Ravens, you heard that right.
03:06These birds, which were considered unclean in Jewish law, were now going to be Elijah's
03:11personal food delivery service.
03:13This is such a powerful image.
03:15While the entire nation, with all its wealth and resources, begins to suffer from the lack
03:20of rain, this lone prophet, hiding by a little brook, is being personally catered to by God.
03:26Twice a day, morning and evening, the ravens brought him bread and meat.
03:30This wasn't just about survival.
03:32It was a profound demonstration of God's sovereignty.
03:35God can use anything, even unclean birds, the most unlikely of messengers, to care for
03:41his people.
03:41It shows that his resources are not limited by our circumstances.
03:45While the world panics, those who trust in him can find provision in the most unexpected
03:50places.
03:51Elijah's obedience to go and hide by the brook, trusting this bizarre plan, is a testament to
03:56his faith.
03:57He believed God's promise, even when it sounded completely crazy.
04:01The whole land is suffering.
04:02But God's plan for Elijah isn't over.
04:04He doesn't just make it rain again.
04:06He has another lesson in faith to teach.
04:09This miraculous provision, day after day, in the middle of a severe famine, was a powerful
04:14testimony.
04:14It demonstrated that God's power isn't confined to Israel.
04:18He is sovereign everywhere, and he cares for the desperate and the forgotten.
04:22It's a beautiful picture of our faith.
04:24Even when it seems to cost us our last everything, unlocks God's unending supply.
04:29The story doesn't end there.
04:30After three and a half years of this brutal drought, God decides it's time for the final
04:36showdown.
04:37He tells Elijah, go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.
04:42So Elijah sets off to face his nemesis once again.
04:44When Ahab sees Elijah, his first words are, is that you, you troubler of Israel?
04:50It's a classic case of blaming the messenger.
04:52Ahab blames Elijah for the drought, completely ignoring the fact that his own actions, leading
04:58the nation into idolatry, were the real cause of the trouble.
05:01But Elijah doesn't back down.
05:03He throws the accusation right back at Ahab, saying, I have not made trouble for Israel,
05:08but you and your father's family have.
05:10You have abandoned the Lord's commands and have followed the balls.
05:14Then, Elijah proposes the ultimate contest.
05:17It's a high stakes, public spectacle designed to prove, once and for all, who the real God
05:23is.
05:23He tells Ahab to summon all the people of Israel to Mount Carmel.
05:27And he says to bring the 450 prophets of Baal, and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who were supported
05:33by Queen Jezebel.
05:34This is going to be a massive event.
05:36When everyone is gathered on the mountain, the verdict was clear.
05:40In that single dramatic moment, the power of God was displayed in a way that no one could
05:45deny.
05:45Baal was a fraud.
05:47The Lord was the one true God.
05:49Following this incredible display, Elijah commands the people to seize the prophets of Baal, and
05:54they are executed, cleansing the land of this false worship.
05:58Immediately after this victory, Elijah tells King Ahab, go, eat and drink, for there is
06:03the sound of a heavy rain.
06:05Elijah climbs back up Mount Carmel, crouches down to the ground, and puts his face between
06:10his knees in a posture of intense prayer.
06:12He sends his servant to go and look toward the sea.
06:15The servant comes back and says, there is nothing there, Elijah tells him.
06:19Go back, seven times he sends his servant.
06:22This shows the persistence of faith.
06:24Elijah knew God had promised rain, and he was going to keep praying until he saw it.
06:29Finally, on the seventh time, the servant returns and says, a cloud as small as a man's
06:35hand is rising from the sea.
06:36That was all Elijah needed to see.
06:39He tells his servant to rush to Ahab and tell him to hitch up his chariot and go down before
06:44the rain stops him.
06:45In a short time, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling,
06:51and Ahab rode off to his palace.
06:53The long, devastating drought was finally over, not by the will of Baal, but through the faithful
06:59prayer of God's servant, Elijah.
07:01What an incredible story of courage, faith, and the undeniable power of the one true God.
