The Conservatives have stormed to victory in Kingswood, dislodging a Labour MP who had held on to the seat for 18 years.

Chris Skidmore was celebrating a 9.43 per cent swing from Labour to the Tories to oust long-serving Roger Berry in the South Gloucestershire constituency.

David Cameron's party also gained Tamworth and Leicestershire North West from Labour.

Meanwhile Labour held on to Tony Blair's former Sedgefield constituency - despite a major swing to the Conservatives. Phil Wilson, who replaced the ex-prime minister as MP in 2007, polled 18,141 votes to secure re-election.

Their were also victories for Home Secretary Alan Johnson in Hull West and Hessle and in Tooting for Transport Minister Sadiq Khan.
