Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says she "stands by" her Shadow Cabinet Minister Nick Timothy, after comments he made about a Muslim prayer event in Trafalgar Square caused outrage among some. Nick Timothy said that a Muslim prayer event held earlier this week in central London, attended by London's Mayor Sadiq Khan, amounted to "an act of domination". Badenoch says: "If people want to have an event that is in accordance with very, very strict values that are not necessarily the values of the population, then go do it in a mosque, not in Trafalgar Square". 00:00This is about that specific event. This is not about people praying.
00:03We have loads of religious festivities in Trafalgar Square.
00:06They are open and welcoming. They are not exclusionary.
00:09They are not pushing women to the back.
00:10They are things which everyone can be free to join in.
00:13That's what Trafalgar Square is for.
00:14If people want to have an event that is in accordance with very, very strict values
00:18that are not necessarily the values of the population,
00:21then go do it in a mosque, not in Trafalgar Square.
00:24And we, the Conservative Party, spent a lot of time trying to make everybody happy.
00:28I am saying that the party needs to say, actually, do you know what?
00:31We think this is too much. Go do this elsewhere, not in Trafalgar Square.
00:35And we are not running away because Labour MPs think they can orchestrate a hypocritical pylon.
00:39I stand by my shadow Justice Secretary.
