00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:33Now, we've all heard that well-worn phrase, man's best friend, which, of course, is always a dog.
00:39But now, apparently, there's a new man's best friend and it's called a goat.
00:44Oh, yes, because apparently a study at Queen Mary University in London has set a series of challenges.
00:50They're so bright. They're so bright, these goats.
00:53And also, they can form a good relationship with the owner.
00:56And apparently they've been domesticated, according to Queen Mary's College, for more than 10,000 years.
01:03So the goat apparently is coming now, bustling its way into our world and becoming our best friend.
01:08And actually, it came into our family quite a long time ago.
01:11My sister, my younger sister, youngest sister, Annabelle, always liked to challenge.
01:18And she decided to get a goat.
01:20And so the goat arrived and caused chaos, ate all the trees.
01:25And the fridge began to fill, as a nanny, with goat's milk.
01:30My father had to milk this thing.
01:32I'm not sure what happened to the goat.
01:34But some years later, I started to eat goat.
01:38And I don't know whether you've ever had roast goat leg for Sunday lunch.
01:44It's very good.
01:47Have you ever come across a friendly goat?
01:51No, that's why I've always had cats.
01:53You haven't got to milk them.
01:54And you definitely don't eat them.
01:56I like to keep my pets and dinner quite separate.
01:59All right.
02:00Now then, who's with us?
02:01Tom's back.
02:02Tom Stevens is back from Westgate-on-Sea.
02:05Bit of a scare yesterday, but you came through, score of 84-81, making it your fourth win.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Well done.
02:14Yeah.
02:15It's tough, isn't it?
02:16It is.
02:17We're just about hanging in there.
02:18It's tough, because you beat somebody with four wins.
02:20Yeah.
02:20I wonder whether Jordan Chambers is going to do to you what you did to Doug.
02:26Let's see.
02:26What do you think?
02:27How are you, Jordan?
02:28I'm very good, thank you, Nick.
02:30Politics student from Maidson, studying at Brunel.
02:33That's right, yeah.
02:33Brilliant.
02:34Big cricket fan, and you love Only Fools and Horses.
02:37You're not alone in that.
02:39But your favourite episode?
02:41Miami twice.
02:42Yeah.
02:43Brilliant.
02:43They're wonderful, aren't they?
02:45Absolutely, yeah.
02:45How are you feeling about this?
02:46You're a big Countdown fan.
02:48I am, yeah.
02:49Very excited.
02:50Excellent.
02:50Great to be here.
02:51All right.
02:51Well, that deserves a big round of applause, then, for Jordan Chambers and Tom Stevens.
02:59And those in the corner, Susie, of course, and for the last time, before we can drag her back
03:04again, the wonderful Louise Minchin.
03:07Welcome.
03:07Why don't you go for a goat at home?
03:10Because you've got practically everything else.
03:11When you were talking about the goat, I thought perhaps maybe a goat would be perfect, with
03:15the mini Shetlands and the hamster and the rabbits.
03:17I mean, you've got...
03:18Next year, I'll be back with a goat.
03:20Do it.
03:21All right.
03:22Now then, Tom, let's have a letters game out of you, shall we?
03:25Thanks.

04:43How did they miss out goats?
04:47Well done.
04:48But you didn't.
04:49Now then, anything else?
04:50I thought there was more than that.
04:51All right.
04:52Yes, well, another animal, the agoutis.
04:55The agoutis would be there for seven.
04:57They're the relative of the guinea pig, the burrowing rodents, agoutis.
05:03Utopias are also there.
05:05I was hoping for pig out, but it's hyphenated.
05:07What a shame.
05:09One day.
05:10Yes, only one day.
05:11Pig out.
05:12All right.

06:35Undertip?
06:37It's there.
06:38Yes, it is there, undertip.
06:41Yeah, tip too little.
06:42It means you undertip the waiter.
06:44All waiters will think you're undertip, no matter what.
06:47What else have we got?
06:48Eruption.
06:49Yes.
06:50Yep, that's there for eight.
06:51And routined, so there were a few eights there.

08:24She hates eating soup.
08:25So we'll gradually cut it out of her diet.
08:43Welcome back.
08:44I left her with the clue.
08:44She hates eating soup.
08:46So we'll gradually cut it out of her diet.
08:47In fact, she'll phase it out.
08:50So it's phase out.
08:52Phase out.
08:53One word.

13:47And then plus the 8, yep.
13:49There we are.
13:50Wow.
13:50And, Rachel, tell us how he now knows the team.
13:54I think the penny has dropped that you had a 10 and a 3 left over for 7 with this
13:59one.
13:59There you go.
14:00That would have given it to you.
14:02There we are.
14:03So, 43 plays 36 as we turn to Louise.
14:07And, Louise, we've spoken about your disastrous expulsion from Marco Pierre White's Hell's Kitchen.
14:14And how you refused to eat his asparagus.
14:19But it all came right, then, because you suddenly got interested in cooking with Celebrity MasterChef.
14:24Tell us a bit about that.
14:26Well, I sort of thought, having had a disaster in anything to do with cooking and television, that I would
14:31try and give it a go.
14:32I'm really, really not the cook in my house.
14:34My husband is a fantastic cook.
14:36And I'm quite lazy.
14:38And I just used to think, if there are carrots and hummus in the fridge, why would you need anything
14:43else?
14:43So, that's the kind of base I came from.
14:45But I just thought, I'm going to go and give this a go, because I know I've got loads to
14:49learn and see how it would go.
14:51So, I went in, and the first thing they do, they do these invention tests, which are really terrifying.
14:57So, they just show you masses of food, and they said to me, okay, right, Louise, you've got to, we
15:02want something inspired by an American diner.
15:04And there's various different things all over your, the kitchen in there.
15:08And I looked at it, and I saw some meat, some steak, and I sort of caught out of my
15:14corner of my eye a mince machine, because I'd seen one in the butcher, and I thought, oh, steak, mince
15:19machine, I think that's what it is.
15:21Let's make a hamburger.
15:22And there were five of us in the kitchen, and I was the only one to make a hamburger.
15:27And Greg and John thought that was, they were really pleased with that, I think, to see a hamburger.
15:31So, that was my first round.
15:33And I genuinely thought, if I got through one or two rounds, it would be, you know, amazing.
15:39But so, I got through to the finals with Jimmy, Jimmy Osmond, who was fantastic, and Alexis Conran.
15:45And it was a brilliant experience, changed my cooking.
15:49Fantastic.
15:49And now, have you muscled your husband out of the kitchen, or is there a tussle?
15:54There's a bit of a tussle, and he asks me how things should be cooked, which is really kind of
15:58weird, because it's never been like that.
15:59And, I mean, you know, the interest in cooking has completely changed, and I plan the cooking.
16:05On a Friday night, instead of buying a takeaway curry, I will spend two hours, you know, getting all the
16:10different ingredients, including the curry leaves or whatever it is, making the curry.
16:13And it's just changed my cooking entirely.
16:16Oh, yeah.
16:16You should try it.
16:18You, what?
16:19Absolutely not.
16:20No, I'm keeping well away from the kitchen.
16:22A very dangerous place.
16:24There we are.
16:24Well done.

25:32And an eight fire pots.
25:35Fire pots were earthenware pots containing explosives, actually, in the olden days,
25:41once used as a missile, but also something in which food can be cooked on a fire pot.
25:47A fire pot.
25:48Yeah.
25:48Very good.
25:5277, 63.
25:54Susie, regalers, tell us.
25:58Are things new?
25:59Well, things goaty, actually, because I'm going to stick with the goat theme,
26:02because goats crop up all over the place in English.
26:07Some of them we know about, like Capricorn, the sign of the goat.
26:12Caper is another one.
26:14Caper actually has two animals at its heart.
26:17It goes back to the horse's leap, known as a capriole.
26:21But also caper came into play because, ultimately, the root Latin capra goat,
26:26the idea of skipping around, prancing around, as goats are wont to do.
26:32It was in the Victorian underworld, apparently, that a caper became something of a criminal heist,
26:38if you like, or some sort of antic, doing which people were up to no good.
26:42But a goat is at the heart of that as well.
26:45And to get someone's goat, we're not actually sure where to get one's goat comes from.
26:50But it may come from the idea of playing the giddy goat, which was to get up to antics, to
26:56be mischievous, etc.
26:57So it may possibly have come from that, that sense of wrongdoing.
27:01And, finally, probably my favourite, the word capricious.
27:05You would think capricious, again, dancing from one thing to another, being slightly unpredictable,
27:09would come straight from a goat, it was influenced by that Latin word capra, meaning a goat,
27:13but actually, it goes all the way back to an Italian word capriccio, which meant a hedgehog head,
27:18and the idea of hair standing on end, so something that sort of caused horror,
27:23and then, ultimately, people to jerk from one movement to another, perhaps in an attempt to escape.
27:29But goats lying behind lots of words in English, but you might not know they were lurking.
27:33Very good.
27:35First thing.
27:39So good.
27:40So good.
27:4177 to 63, and it's Jordan's letters again.
27:44Jordan.
27:45OK, a consonant, please, Rachel.
27:47Thank you, Jordan.
27:48M.
27:49And another.
27:51L.
27:52And another.
27:54R.
27:55And a vowel.
27:57E.
27:58And another.
28:00A.
28:01And a consonant, please.
28:04S.
28:05And another.
28:07F.
28:09And a vowel.
28:11O.
28:13And a final consonant, please.
28:15And a final L.
28:17And here's the countdown clock.
28:20And a vowel.
28:21And ainton.
28:22And a vowel.
28:48The ground.
28:49Jordan? Just a six. A six, Tom? A seven. Jordan? Molars. Molars and loafers. And loafers.
28:59Yes, very good. Can we match or go better? What do we think? We had femoral, which is
29:09the adjective to do with the femur. Other sevens were their flamers, people who send
29:14horrible messages, usually on the computer online. And formals, you can throw off your
29:21formals, if that's your formal evening gear. That's another seven. Formals. All right,
29:27if you insist. 84, please. 63, and it's Tom's letters game. Tom, consonant, please. Thank
29:33you, Tom. M. And another? D. And another? R. And another?
29:44N. A vowel? E. And another? I. And another? U. And another? E. And a final consonant,
30:00please. And a final D. Stand by.
30:35Tom? Just a six. A six? Just a five. And a five? You're five. Mind. Mind and ruin.
30:43Ruined. Ruined. I think you can do better than that, can't you?
30:48Shall we start off with denied? Yes. And then reminded is there for eight.
30:54Yeah. Reminded. Very good. Well done. Good score for Tom. 90, 63 on for Jordan as we go to
31:03the final numbers game. Jordan? One big and five small, please, Rachel. Thank you, Jordan.
31:08One from the top five, a little, to finish the day. And these numbers are seven, five,
31:15nine, three, another three, and 50. Good luck. The target, 838.
31:23838.
31:25838.
31:55Yes, Jordan. 840. 840. And Tom? I've just got a bit wrong, so nothing. So we withdraw and leave it
32:05to Jordan. OK. 9 plus 7 equals 16. 9 plus 7, 16. 50 plus 3. 53. Times them both together
32:15for 848. 848, yes. And then minus the 5 and the remaining 3 for 840.
32:21Yeah, two away. Well done. Close but not perfect. We look to Rachel for that. 838. Is that a tricky
32:28one? Yes, leave it with me for one second.
32:32They do that. 90 plays 70. As we go into the final round, you know how it works. Fingers on
32:38buzzers. Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
33:13No. No lug here. Got to be difficult. Now, who in the audience? Do I see hands there? No. Let's
33:22roll it. This is a difficult one, then. Let's just see how difficult.
33:26Discredit. Discredit. Well, discredit. Anyway, all credit to Tom. Well done, Tom Stevens. Another good win. 90 points. I think
33:34your highest score, perhaps?
33:37I think, despite my maths, I think so. Yeah, very good indeed. Jordan, only 20 behind. That's nothing. You did
33:42very well indeed. Thank you for coming.
33:44Thank you very much. It's been a very good day. Good. There's your goodie bag. And good luck with your
33:49politics degree. Thank you. All right. We'll see you tomorrow. See you tomorrow. Thank you.
33:55Sadly, oh, parting is such a sweet sorrow. Oh. I know. You've been such fun. You can still watch in
34:02the mornings, you know.
34:04Absolutely. Absolutely. No, it's been great fun having you here, and I hope that you'll come back soon again.
34:08Thank you very much indeed. I shall go away to get some more pets and do some more cooking.
34:12Indeed. Well done. All right. And we shall see Susie, of course, tomorrow.
34:16You will.
34:16And Rachel. Rachel, who have you got tomorrow?
34:18Charlotte Hawkins tomorrow.
34:20Charlotte Hawkins, of course.
34:21Did we mention that? Breakfast on the other side. It doesn't exist.
34:24All right. We'll see you tomorrow. See you tomorrow. Join us tomorrow, same time, same place. You be sure of
