00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now I'm sure you won't have missed the story, great, great story actually,
00:38that the giant panda, symbol of conservation, has been removed from the endangered list.
00:45They're no longer on the threshold of extinction.
00:49That's fantastic.
00:50The population, it says here, has risen in the decade up to 2014 by 17%.
00:55And the census found 1,850 of our friend the panda living wild in China.
01:02It's fantastic.
01:03A decrease in poaching, of course, and an expansion of the giant panda's protected habitat
01:08has led to this surge in the population, of course, breeding programmes too.
01:13So there we are.
01:14Rachel, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has stated that there are still
01:2023,928 species around the world threatened with extinction, including the Bornean and Sumatran
01:31orangutan.
01:31And I think you know those chaps, don't you?
01:34Yeah, I saw those in Borneo.
01:35Gorgeous.
01:35And the Western Lowland Gorilla.
01:37And when you went to Borneo, tell us what you felt about these wonderful things.
01:41Well, the problem in Borneo is they're cutting all the rainforest down and planting palm oil.
01:46So there's a lot of good people doing a lot of conservation to try and stop that.
01:49Actually, the most interesting conservation project I saw was in Brazil, and it was a jaguar
01:53conservation project.
01:54They're using cold, hard numbers and going into local farms and saying, you know, this
01:58is how many cows we have, this is how many are killed by the jaguars, and this is how
02:02many are killed by, you know, a snake or a caiman or something else.
02:06And it's obviously always ongoing and always changing the methods they're using, but
02:10absolutely fascinating.
02:11I've seen the jaguars and the orangutans in the wild, just the best experiences ever.
02:16Fantastic.
02:17Teach the kids.
02:18Teach the kids.
02:19All right.
02:19Now, who's with us?
02:20Andrew McLeod is back, business analyst from Peterborough, living in Edinburgh, with five good
02:25wins under your belt.
02:26You've done tremendously well, and maths have been a real strong suit for you.
02:31Yeah, it's helped from time to time.
02:33Welcome back.
02:34Welcome back.

02:47Now then, you're no stranger here, because I think that when you were last in this studio,
02:52your dad, Stephen, was sitting where you are.
02:55Well, he was sitting over there.
02:57He started where you are.
02:58He did sit.
02:59And then he went over there.
03:00Won six games.
03:01Yeah.
03:01Yeah, but he didn't get a conundrum because you got it.
03:04Yeah.
03:05Yeah.
03:31So you've already got a mug.
03:31I tried to do it every time I get my legs out.

13:37Well done.
13:38Well done.
13:38Very well done.
13:42So with the score standing at Andrew on 48, Samantha on 14, we turn to Brendan.
13:48And Brendan, so Strictly's in full swing.
13:52Full.
13:52There must have been some great memorable moments over the years.
13:55Would you tell us about that?
13:56I was going to tell you today about a moment I had on the show.
14:01We have many moments on the show, as Rachel will testify to.
14:04It's something that's very exciting to create.
14:06When you create a number, you put your heart and soul into it.
14:09You listen to the music.
14:10You try and do what the choreography best is telling you what to do at the time.
14:15So this one particular time, I was dancing with the lovely Kelly Brooke.
14:18Great series for me.
14:18Had a really good time with Kelly.
14:20She was a phenomenal dancer.
14:21Probably one of the best the show's had, in my opinion.
14:24And this particular dance, we were going to dance a tango.
14:27And it was a very fiery, passionate tango.
14:29And I had choreographed in a proper slap.
14:32So I got a slap as if we'd had a bit of an argument.
14:34I'm not a violent type.
14:36But it just suited the music.
14:37So that was what was happening.
14:39So this particular day, live on the show, I forgot the choreography halfway through.
14:43It's live.
14:45There is no going back.
14:48So Kelly sort of pulled me into line, if you like, and put me into my position.
14:52And then I caught up with her and carried on.
14:55Just about probably 15 seconds before the slap came.
14:58Well, I'd ask her to not hit me too hard, but make it look pretty real.
15:01Needless to say, she made it look extremely real.
15:03And it hurt quite a lot.
15:05And it was a very memorable moment for me on the show.
15:07Yeah, we have moments like these all the time, even as the pros.
15:10Where did she hit you?
15:11I've forgotten.
15:12Right across the chops.
15:13Right across the chops.
15:13It was a choreographed part of the move.
15:15A smack.
15:15She had velvet gloves on.
15:17And you couldn't hear it, but I felt it.
15:20It was a nice reminder to keep your head clean and keep getting your core over your head.
15:26An unusual way to get hurt, I guess.
15:28Because, I mean, with all that sort of movement and jumping and muscularity, frankly, the risk of getting hurt.
15:36It's a pretty dangerous thing on occasion, especially with the lifting we do.
15:39Occasionally the girls do get hurt if they hit the floor.
15:42Occasionally the guys get hurt if we try and not let them hit the floor.
15:46But the celebrities on the show, they actually, if they get fatigue or if they get hurt, their bodies aren't
15:52necessarily used to hurting in that way.
15:54You use a lot of different muscle groups that you don't necessarily use in normal day-to-day life.
15:58It's very hard to recover from that.
16:00My partner last year, Kirsty Gellar, she had a blister on her foot that would not heal and it got
16:05worse and worse and worse.
16:06And she actually had to have it properly treated.
16:08So even something as innocuous as a blister can be quite troublesome.
16:12Absolutely.
16:12Well done.
16:14Very good.
16:17It's a dangerous old game.
16:19It's a dangerous old game.
16:21Now then, 48 places out, 14.
16:23Andrew in the lead and it's Andrew's letters game now.

29:21Something about which we know nothing.
29:23Nothing.
29:24Loutish and?
29:25I was just looking and it goes back to a German word meaning to bow down.
29:28Perhaps the idea of brawling in the gutters being sort of stooped down to a low level.
29:33But those were our sevens.
29:35Loutish behaviour. 84 to 28.

31:02Now then, Brendan and Susie.
31:05That's it?

31:09All right, well done.
31:10Well done, Andrew.
31:11Well done.
31:1292 plays 28.
31:13So here we are, final numbers game.
31:15Samantha.
31:16Too large, please.
31:17Thank you, Samantha.
31:18Too large for Little to finish off the day.
31:21And for the final time, the selection is six.
31:24One.
31:25Four.
31:26Eight.
31:27And the large two, 25 and 75.
31:30And the target to reach 961.
31:33Nine, six, one.
32:05Samantha.
32:07No, nothing.
32:08How about, Andrew?
32:10958.
32:12958? Yes, Andrew.
32:1575 plus 25 plus 6 is 106.
32:1975 plus 25 plus 6, 106.
32:228 plus 1 is 9.
32:24Yeah.
32:24Multiply them for 954.
32:27And add the 4.
32:28And add the 4. 958, 3 away.
32:32Well done, but it's quite a way, 3 away.
32:35961. Rachel, how tricky is that?
32:37I got 1 away, so give me a few more seconds.
32:40Will do.
32:41All right, so 99 plays 28.
32:44Andrew just nudging the 100 there as we go into the final round.
32:48So, Samantha and Andrew, fingers on buzzers.
32:51Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:57Whoa.
32:59Andrew McLeod, what have you got?
33:01Reordered.
33:03Reordered.
33:05Here he comes.
33:06Oh, well done.
33:12Well done indeed, Andrew.
33:13Samantha.
33:16You came up against somebody who's now got six wins under his bed.
33:19A bit like your dad, actually.
33:21Yeah.
33:21But, well done.
33:23Thank you very much indeed for coming.
33:25There's your goodie bag.
33:26And back to Winchester with you.
33:29And best wishes to your dad.
33:31All right.
33:31And we shall see Andrew McLeod with six wins.
33:36Never relax, Andrew.
33:38Never relax.
33:39We'll see you tomorrow.
33:40All right.

33:47See you then.
33:47Look forward to it.
33:48And, Rachel, what have you been up to?
33:51About three hours late, but this is the holy grail of Countdown Numbers games.
33:54It's the square of a prime number.
33:56It's exciting.
33:57So, 25 plus six is 31.
34:00And then eight times four is 32.
34:03Minus one is another 31.
34:05And times them together.
34:07Well done.
34:09Well done, Rachel.
34:12That's truly a tricky one, right?
34:15I'll be able to sleep tonight now.
34:16Brilliant.
34:17Well done.
34:17So, there we are.
34:18See you again tomorrow.
