00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on the day that a new film is released.
00:38It's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
00:41It's J.K. Rowling's screenplay debut, apparently.
00:45And it's all about a magical briefcase.
00:48And it expands.
00:50It's full of extraordinary, exotic and unusual animals.
00:53And talking about fantastic animals, frightening animals, scary animals.
00:57That's what's in this briefcase.
01:00I remember I was very fortunate enough to stand next to an elephant.
01:03I was sitting in a jeep and right next to me, there was a huge elephant.
01:10There were quite a lot of elephants, but this one stood right next to me.
01:12And what was surprising, Rachel, the length of their eyelashes.
01:16That's what got me.
01:17You'd love them.
01:18I'm sure I would.
01:20What about you?
01:21Have you come face to face with something dangerous?
01:24In the animal kingdom, that is?
01:25Well, face to face, if I only should say that, because a slightly smaller scale, but a bit more scary
01:29at the time, was that I had a tarantula on my face.
01:32Oh!
01:32And before I did it, I did not like spiders.
01:35I wouldn't go near a spider.
01:37I didn't like them at all.
01:38But it was for Cancer Research UK, they had a Children's Cancer Awareness Month, and it was called Brave for
01:43the Brave.
01:44So do something brave, because children with cancer haven't got a choice.
01:47So I had a tarantula on my face, and it was fine.
01:50It's just like any old animal that you'd stroke, so I'm cured.
01:53Good for you.
01:54Yeah.
01:54Now then, who's back?
01:55Tom Stevens is back from Westgate-on-Sea.
01:58Two good wins.
01:59He's lecturing at a college in Margate, and two solid performances.
02:05Well done.
02:06Well done.
02:06Thanks.
02:07And you're joined by Mike Springett, a university graduate from Orpington in Kent, who's an athlete, two-runner, water skiing,
02:14tennis.
02:14And every year now, because I think your mum's from Croatia.
02:17She is, yes.
02:18And you trail off down to Croatia.
02:20Beautiful country.
02:21We do.
02:21It's a lovely country, yeah.
02:23I recommend it for anyone who wants to go there.
02:27I've driven down that coast.
02:28It's just glorious.
02:29Those pine woods on the coast road, yeah.
02:32Definitely.
02:32Beautiful scenery.
02:33Beautiful scenery.
02:34Well, good luck to you.
02:35Big round of applause for Mike and Tom.
02:37Tom Stevens.
02:42And over in the corner, of course, Susie, joined once again by Louise Minchin.
02:47You have the best smile on telly.
02:50Do you know that?
02:51No.
02:51Yeah.
02:51Well, I'm telling you now.
02:52You have.
02:53It's fantastic.
02:53Cheers us all up.

13:05I had sorry 100 add 20
13:08100 add 25, times 8 for 1,000.
13:1375 minus 50 is 25.
13:16Yeah.
13:17And there should be a 5 left to add on if you take the 25 away.
13:21Yes.
13:21Yeah.
13:22Yeah, well done.
13:23And, Mike?
13:24Two away.
13:25OK, 100 plus 5?

13:33Times 8, 840.
13:37Plus the 75?
13:41Plus the 75 for 915.
13:47Plus the 50?
13:50Plus the 50, 965.
13:54Erm, don't think there's anything left over.
13:57Sorry.
13:58I had luck.
13:59I had luck.
14:01You had us on the edge of our seats there.
14:03Now, Rachel.
14:05Erm, yes, this one was possible if you say 75 divided by 25 is 3, 100 minus 3, 97, 50
14:14divided
14:15by 5 is 10.
14:17Times them together for 970 and add on the 8.
14:209, 7, 8.
14:21Terrific.
14:21Well done.
14:27Well done, indeed.
14:28So, the score's standing 35 to Mike's 29.
14:31Slip back a little bit there as we turn to Louise.
14:34And, Louise, we've heard about your triathlons over the last few days.
14:37Now, what about training?
14:38It didn't suddenly happen.
14:39You had to work at it.
14:41No, you've got to work at it because you've got to work at swimming, cycling, and running
14:45as well.
14:46And it's not just that.
14:47There's this thing called transition.
14:49So, when you get out of the swimming, you've got to sort of very quickly get out of your
14:53wetsuit, onto your bike, and then do the cycling, and then get off your bike onto the
14:59running.
14:59So, I always say to people, if you're thinking about doing triathlon, you've got to be quite
15:02good at sort of multitasking because so many things can go wrong.
15:07And they do.
15:08I mean, for example, I've been in the swim.
15:10I wear contact lenses.
15:12One of my contact lenses has come out in the swim.
15:15So, I've got out of the pool, literally hardly able to see at all.
15:18Got on, found my bike, but done a whole triathlon-like cycling with my eye closed going, is that
15:24a left or a right turn?
15:25So, you've got to be really prepared.
15:27And I hadn't learned to put my contact lens, you know.
15:29I always, I actually have one sellotaped by a bike now.
15:33Good idea.
15:34Well, you just never know when it's going to happen again, do you?
15:36Good idea.
15:36Now, do you have to wear a wetsuit?
15:38Because that would save time.
15:40Oh, it will.
15:41Well, it wouldn't, it wouldn't, because actually the wetsuits keep you, they keep you very buoyant.
15:46So, actually, you can swim more quickly if you're wearing a wetsuit.
15:49But if it's a certain temperature, you don't have to wear a wetsuit.
15:52So, yes, you're right.
15:52You could save time doing that.
15:54Because you've got to peel that off.
15:55And really quickly.
15:57And I, you know, I've got stuck in the wetsuit before now.
15:59But people are, you know, they do help you out.
16:00But I think I just love the, I love that, I love that it's really difficult.
16:04I love that a million things can go wrong.
16:06And, you know, you can try this at any level.
16:09Come on.
16:10No.
16:12Very good.
16:13You keep going.
16:14Well done.
16:17Well done.
16:20That's wonderful.
16:21Now, 35 to 29.
16:24Tom, just in the lead.
16:26Off you go.

17:48Un-rope is also there, yes.
17:49He's been climbing, for example, just to detach oneself from the rope.
17:52Exactly.
17:53Yeah.
17:53Yeah, sometimes a dangerous thing to do.
17:56Now, what have you got?
17:58Grouped is there for seven, pronged as in a two-pronged attack.
18:03But just seven's for us as well.

22:15I've never knowingly done that.
22:17No.
22:17It's a really good word to learn, this one.
22:19It's a form of hornpipe,
22:21and you'll find it in the traditional music of parts of Wales and Cornwall.
22:25A single reed, often carved out of bone.
22:29The reed itself carved out of the elder tree,
22:31and they look quite beautiful if you look them up.

26:31thank you all right so it's Tom on 54 Mike on 41 as we turn to Susie for her
26:38wonderful origins of words now then Susie what have you got for us today
26:41well I quite like surprising couples in English so words but you wouldn't
26:48necessarily expect a link between and one of those is the coupling of a hard
26:54cheese and a form of currency Emmentaler which is that hard Swiss cheese full of
26:59holes took its second the second part of its name from the German word Tyler which
27:04meant a valley Emma is a personal name and so Emmentaler met Emma's valley and that
27:11was the topographical name the place name essentially where the cheese was first
27:14produced meanwhile in Bohemia now part of the Czech Republic German speaking at the
27:20time at the German Tyler which was in Emmentaler joined up with the personal
27:25name Joachim to form Joachim's Tyler or Joachim's valley and here silver was
27:31mined and a very large coin that was minted there from silver was named after the
27:36valley and so Joachim's Tyler became a form of currency it eventually what was
27:43adopted by the US because they wanted to distinguish their currency from that of
27:46the the British after the American Revolution and so the Tyler as it was
27:51then shortened to became their form of currency and of course with the American
27:55accent over time the Tyler where that began his valley ended up as dollar wow wow that's interesting
28:08brilliant I have no idea silver dollar silver dollar thank you Susie 54

32:56Giving in?
32:57Giving in, yeah.
32:59We've given in, Rachel.
33:012, 5, 9, is it that hard?
33:03I found just one way.
33:04If you say 75 times 10 is 750,
33:09and then 9 plus 1 minus 7 is 3,
33:13divide that for 250 and add the other 9 to get 2, 5, 9.
33:17Terrific.
33:19Well done.
33:23That's swell.
33:25So here we go.
