00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on a very special day for television.
00:35That's the 2nd of November.
00:37Why would that be, I hear you cry?
00:39First of all, it was 80 years ago, back in 1936, on the 2nd of November, that the BBC launched
00:46its first, it says here, high-definition service.
00:49But the most important thing, of course, was that on the 2nd of November, 1982, Channel 4 got switched on.
00:56And whose mug was to be seen on that very first day?
01:00None other than the great Richard Whiteley, who presented Countdown.
01:05Nowadays, of course, there are so many channels, you don't know which way to turn.
01:08In those days, only two or three or four, whatever it was.
01:12But now, any number.
01:14And one of the great joys of that is, because I'm a bit of a channel surfer, I'm a bit
01:18of a news fiend.
01:20Mm-hmm.
01:20And I love going on to the news channels.
01:23I'm on Al Jazeera.
01:25I'm on CNN.
01:26I'm on France 24, BBC.
01:29I love it.
01:29Brilliant.
01:30They're different, aren't they?
01:31I think I was abroad when there was a shooting of the police officers in the States, and I watched
01:37some American news channel, and they had a video of someone actually hiding and filming it.
01:42And they could show people being shot on television, but the guy swore watching it, and they had to blank
01:47that out.
01:48I think there's a certain...
01:49That's extraordinary, isn't it?
01:51Different, it's just different, isn't it, the States and what they broadcast.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Now then, Rick Hanstie, you're back.
01:57Well done.
01:57You've got three good wins.
01:59How are you feeling today, Rick?
02:00Because you had a bit of a scare yesterday.
02:02Yes, yeah, almost.
02:04Just scraped through, really, didn't it?
02:05Wasn't it a crucial conundrum, casting my mind back?
02:08Yeah.
02:09It was indeed.
02:10And neither has got it, fortunately.
02:12But you're joined today by Alice Curtis.
02:15Welcome, Alice.
02:16And you're from Reading, but you're studying event management and marketing in Chichester, the University of Chichester.
02:24Yeah.
02:24And you're a big Formula One fan.
02:26Yes.
02:26Did you say before we went on air that you were down at Goodwood?
02:31Yes.
02:32Done some work down there over the summer a couple of years ago, which was really good.
02:36What was that, the Festival of Speed?
02:38Yes, the Festival of Speed.
02:39Excellent stuff.
02:40Well, good luck, Alice.
02:41Let's have a big round of applause for Alice and Rick.
02:48And please welcome to Dictionary Corner, Susie Dent, of course.
02:51And on a big day for TV, he's been a regular on our screens for many, many years in Doctor
02:57Who, Only Fools and Horses.
02:59And more recently, are you being served?
03:01It's John Chalice.
03:02John, welcome.
03:04Thank you very much.
03:05Good to be here.

04:36It used to be, I'm sure.
04:39Maybe once upon a time, yeah.
04:40OK, well, that's only a five for me.
04:41That's terrible.
04:42That's not terrible.
04:43There is another seven there.
04:44Four gut.
04:46Four gut?
04:46Which is not as nice, actually.
04:48Four gut.
04:48F-O-R-E-G-U-T.
04:49That is the upper part of the gut coming up towards the mouth.

06:12Excellent.
06:13Well done.
06:13Well done.
06:14Yes.
06:18Gives you a point lead two.
06:19Well done.
06:20Very good.
06:21Very strong.
06:22John?
06:23Susie?
06:24Yes, yes.
06:25I think you've got a nine here, actually.
06:28Really?
06:28What?
06:28Mediation?
06:29Yes.
06:30Well, very good.
06:31Is that right?
06:32Excellent.
06:33Mediation, right?
06:36Mediation.
06:37Excellent score.
06:37You can get better than that.
06:38Very good.
06:38Well done, John.
06:40All right, so Rick on seven, Alice on eight, and it's Rick's numbers game.
06:43Rick?
06:44All right, so two from the top, and you've got any other four.
06:48Thank you, Rick.
06:48Too big, poor, little.
06:50And the first one of the day is eight.
06:53Eight.
06:54Three.
06:56Nine.
06:56And the big two, one hundred and fifty.
07:00And the target, two hundred and thirty-five.
07:02Two, three, five.
07:27Two, three, five.
07:34Rick?
07:35Uh, two, three, four.
07:37One away.
07:38Alice?
07:39Two, three, three.
07:40Two, three, three.
07:42Let's start with Rick, see how he gets on.
07:45Uh, three times one hundred.
07:47Three hundred.
07:48Uh, minus the fifty.
07:49Two fifty.
07:50Uh, minus eight.
07:51Minus eight.
07:52Yeah.
07:53One away.
07:54There we go, one away.
07:55Two, three, five.
07:56Rachel, you can do that for us?
07:59It was there.
07:59If you say fifty minus eight is forty-two.
08:04Times it by three for one hundred and twenty-six.
08:06And then add the nine and add the hundred.
08:09Two, three, five.
08:10There we go.
08:10Two, three, five.
08:11Well done.
08:16So the score's standing at fourteen points to Rick.
08:19Alice on eight as we turn to our first tea-time teaser, which is Oval Trey.
08:24And the clue, it might be clean, but you wouldn't eat your dinner off it.
08:28It might be clean, but you wouldn't eat your dinner off it.
08:46Welcome back.
08:48I've, uh, left you with a clue.
08:49It might be clean, but you wouldn't eat your dinner off it.
08:52And the answer, written here, is lavatory.
08:56Lavatory.

10:07I've messed up.
10:08Let's go to Rick, shall we?
10:10I have a seven.
10:11A seven, yes.
10:12Worries.
10:13Yep, very good.
10:14We're very happy with that, yes.
10:15Yes, we liked it.
10:16Seven was good.
10:17John's wrestling with something there.
10:19Yes, well, as I do at home with my garden, I'm wrestling with growers.
10:24Growers?
10:24Yeah.
10:25All right.
10:26Anything else?
10:27Yes, regrows, a variant on that, but just sevens for us, Nick.
10:31All right, 21 plays eight, and it's Rick's letters game.
10:34Rick.
10:35Start with a consonant, please.
10:37Thank you, Rick.
10:39N.
10:39And another.
10:41R.
10:43And another.
10:44D.
10:46And a vowel.
10:47I.
10:48And another.
10:49E.
10:50And another.
10:52I.
10:53And a consonant.
10:55H.
10:56And a consonant.

11:36Six.
11:37A six.
11:38Alice?
11:39Five.
11:40And that five?
11:41Dinah.
11:42Dinah.
11:42That's good.
11:43And Rick?
11:44Hinder.
11:45And Hinder?
11:46Yes.
11:47Absolutely fine.
11:48Is there such a word as repined?
11:51To pine something and then repine it?
11:53Repine.
11:54Yes, there is.
11:55Repentable?
11:55Not in that sense, though.
11:57It's to fret or express discontent is to repine.
11:59I prefer my version, thank you very much.
12:02It's all very well, isn't it?
12:05Susie?
12:06Ripened is also there.
12:08Ripened.
12:08Oh, that's much better.
12:09Yes.
12:10A bit nicer that way.
12:11Or a pine.
12:1227 plays eight.
12:13And Alice, your numbers game.
12:15Can I try something different?
12:16I'll have three big and three small.
12:18You can indeed.
12:19Thank you, Alice.
12:20Three from the top and three little ones coming up.
12:22And these three small ones are one, seven, and nine.
12:27And the big ones, 25, 75, and 100.
12:31And the target, 946.
12:34946.
12:36One.
13:04.
13:06Alice?
13:07949.
13:08949. Think anywhere close.
13:11No? Yes, Alice?
13:13So, 9 times 100 is...
13:159 times 100, 900.
13:1875 minus 25.
13:20Is 50.
13:22So, plus that.
13:25950.
13:26And then minus the 1.
13:27And then 949, yep, 3 away.
13:29There we go.
13:30But 946, Rachel, help us.
13:33I got to 1 away, so leave it with me.
13:36All right, indeed.
13:3727 plays. Alice is now 15.
13:39As we turn to John.
13:42Now then, John.
13:44Only Fools and Horses.
13:45It was a monster, monster hit.
13:48Playing Boise must have been the greatest fun on earth.
13:52I remember lots of things,
13:53but one show we did, The Jolly Boys Outing,
13:57which is a lot of people's favourite show.
13:58It was filmed in Margate,
14:01down there on the Kent coast,
14:03and lots of fun at the fun fair and so on.
14:06But we were held up filming.
14:08We were out in the town of Margaret,
14:10and we had to have security with us,
14:12obviously, to keep people away
14:14who wanted to be part of the filming.
14:17And I was sitting there waiting,
14:18and the PA came out and said,
14:22listen, guys, it's going to be about half an hour.
14:24We've got technical problems,
14:26so go off and do whatever you want,
14:28but be back in half an hour
14:29and take someone with you.
14:30In other words, you know, member of security.
14:32So I turned to the guy next to me,
14:34I'd run out of cigarettes,
14:35and I said,
14:36I'm just going to nip up the road of the tobacco.
14:38Will you come with me?
14:39He said, sure.
14:39You know, so off we went.
14:41Well, I bought cigarettes, lit one up,
14:42and offered one to him,
14:43and I said, thank you very much.
14:45I was sitting there smoking,
14:47and I said,
14:47do you do a lot of this sort of thing, then?
14:50And he said, what?
14:52I said, well, you know, security and all that.
14:55He said, I don't know, mate.
14:56I run a pub down the road.
14:57I'm just a big fan.
15:00There you go.
15:03Lovely.
15:05So you could get your cigarettes, anyway.
15:07Yeah, I'd gone off the road
15:08with a completely random stranger.
15:11What always interested me,
15:12and it's still on every day
15:15on one of the channels.
15:17There's another episode.
15:19The writer.
15:20It was one writer?
15:22John Sullivan, yes.
15:23John Sullivan was the only man
15:24who ever wrote Only Fools and Horses.
15:26He must have been a genius.
15:27He was.
15:28He was.
15:29That's why I was so lucky,
15:30because he not only wrote great jokes,
15:34but he was a great plotter, too.
15:36His stories were so intricate.
15:38Yeah.
15:38There's so many wonderful moments in it.
15:41I love that show.
15:42Thank you very much, John.
15:44Now, 946, Rachel.
15:46Yes, I did find it.
15:48If you say 75 plus 25 is 100,
15:527 minus 1 is 6.
15:54Take that away for 94.
15:56Times that by 9 for 846,
15:58and add on the 100.
16:00946.
16:01Well done.

24:18A risky seven.
24:21Rick.
24:22Uh, pasty.
24:23Pasty.
24:24Now then, Alice Curtis.
24:25Pagiest.
24:27Pagiest.
24:28I thought you were going to say gapiest there, which isn't in.
24:31I don't think page is just going to be either.
24:34It's not, I'm afraid.
24:35I'm sorry.
24:36Bad luck.
24:37Yeah.
24:38Now, what can we have, I wonder?
24:41John?
24:42Oh, it's only six, uh, ageist.
24:45Ageist?
24:46Yes.
24:46We know about that.
24:47We do.
24:47You and I?
24:49How dare you?
24:51LAUGHTER
24:53No, absolutely, yes, yes.
24:55We do, I'm afraid.
24:56Ageism.
24:56Ah, it's a cruel thing.
24:58Ageist.
24:58Yep, and that was our best.
25:00Best we can do.
25:01All right.
25:02So, 62 to 37, and Susie, your origins of words.
25:07Well, John was talking about the influence of John Sullivan,
25:11on Only Fools and Horses, and of course, as you say,
25:14it's still on our screens today.
25:15It's still repeated, so we can still see his legacy.
25:18But he leaves tracts in the Oxford English Dictionary as well.
25:21That's not the dictionary that we use on Countdown,
25:23which is a current English dictionary.
25:25The OED is the monument to the English language,
25:28and it gives the earliest sense of a word,
25:31but it also gives examples through time
25:33of how that word is being used.
25:34And John Sullivan in Only Fools and Horses
25:37is mentioned lots of times.
25:39It's giving examples of words,
25:41and sometimes it's the first or second example.
25:44So he's there, for example, under Cream Crackered.
25:47Only Fools and Horses is mentioned under that.
25:50Git.
25:52Mutton, for being deaf, which of course goes back to
25:54Mutt and Jeff, rhyming slang Mutt and Jeff, deaf.
25:58Mutt and Jeff were originally two comic characters, incidentally.
26:01The Old Bill, which the police officers featured large
26:06and only Fools and Horses.
26:08Pop Sock, which is a nice one.
26:10Ruby Murray for a curry.
26:12And of course, the interactions between Rodney and Del Boy.
26:16You've got Plonker, the wonderful word,
26:18and Dipstick as well.
26:19He was always calling Rodney a Dipstick or a Plonker.
26:22So lots and lots of examples.
26:24Possibly my absolute favourite one, though, was Lovely Jubbly,
26:27and that was coined by John Sullivan as an exclamation of approval,
26:33something being great, it's Lovely Jubbly.
26:35And he took that from an advertising slogan for a soft drink,
26:38a soft orange drink, called Jubbly,
26:40and the advertising slogan was Lovely Jubbly.
26:43And he took that, put it in the show,
26:45and the rest, as they say, is history.
26:46So as I say, he leaves tracks and he leaves great footprints,
26:50not just on our TV screens, but also in our language.
26:53Yes, as I mean, there's all sorts of them out there.
26:56Like this man who had a wig on, and it was a rug.
27:00Yes.
27:01I don't know where that comes from.
27:02So talk about that as a, you know,
27:05as a joking thing for a haircut,
27:06and I'm going to have my rug cut.
27:07I'm going to have my rug cut.
27:08Yeah.
27:09What about Marlene?
27:10Do you think that was rhyming slang for something?
27:14What do you think?
27:15Look up Marlene.
27:16No, but you two were.
27:17Look up Marlene, yes.
27:19You were a caution, you two.
27:21You really were.
27:21It was wonderful.
27:23APPLAUSE
27:27Now then, Rick on 62, Alice 37,
27:30and it's Alice's letters game.

28:44You seem unsure, but it's absolutely fine.
28:45Yes, a good seven.
28:47And the corner?
28:49I've got this right.
28:49Over, overdubs?
28:51To overdub?
28:52Yeah.
28:53Yeah.
28:53Why not?
28:54Yeah?
28:54Using sound recording, yeah?
28:56Yeah.
28:56One, two, three, four.
28:56One sound on top of an audio recording.
28:59That's eight.

30:19Slider. Now, what's this risky is?
30:21Slider.
30:22Yeah.
30:23Oh, I'm not sure it's actually going to be in the dictionary.
30:26No, it's not.
30:27Sorry, Rick.
30:28I can see that John is...
30:31Oh, God.
30:32No?
30:32I've written something down, but I don't...
30:34I'm not...
30:35I don't think it's right.
30:38Try out.
30:38Resiled.
30:39Yeah.
30:40R-E-S-I-L-E-D.
30:42Yeah, to resile is to withdraw from a position or abandon it.
30:47Yeah.
30:47Or a course of action, indeed, to resile.
30:49Very good, John.
30:50I thought that did so well.
30:51I mean, I just didn't know that.
30:53You're welcome.

33:11All right.
33:12So there we have it.
33:1379 to Alice's 53.
33:16Brave attempt, but you're up against somebody who's halfway to becoming an octo champ.
33:20So, Alice, that's no bad score, believe me.
33:23So it's back to Chichester.
33:25So take this goodie bag with you.
33:27And our very best wishes, too.

33:40And we shall see John and Susie tomorrow as well.
33:43Are you enjoying it, John?
33:44I'm having a great time, yes.
33:46Occasionally, my poor little brain gets completely scrambled by these letters, and particularly
33:53the numbers.
33:53I'm full of admiration for you guys, really.
33:56You're off on tour soon again.
33:58Back on tour, as it were, with your show.
34:00Yes, that's right.
34:01Yes.
34:02It's a show called Only Fools and Boys See You.
34:04And it's sort of on the back of my autobiography.
34:08And lots of stories, you know.
34:10I mean, not many people know my first serious part of the score was that of a girl.
34:14Oh, really?
34:15You don't seem altogether surprised.
34:18You got through that phase okay?
34:21Yes.
34:21Well done.
34:22Well, I don't know.
34:22Maybe I haven't.
34:23I mean, who knows?
